Explore the vibrant world of Probus clubs and join the Timperley Probus Club's enriching community

A rich history and a warm welcome can be found in our Probus clubs

Probus clubs have a rich history dating back to 1965 when Fred Carnill and fellow retirees from Rotary began gathering for coffee. Inspired by this camaraderie, Harold Blanchard initiated the first Probus Club luncheon in March 1966. Today, there are over 4000 Probus Clubs worldwide, fostering a sense of community among retired individuals.

Among these clubs is the Timperley Probus Club, established in 1997 by four former Rotarians. Starting with just 21 members meeting at the Quarry Bank Inn, the club has since grown to include 45 members from various backgrounds. They convene every alternate Tuesday at Timperley Sports Club, where engaging speaker meetings cover a range of topics, from crime fiction to historical events.

Timperley Probus meet for coffee at 10am on Tuesday at Timperley Sports Club. Subjects have ranged from ‘writing crime fiction’ to ‘the rise of Hitler’ or ‘Life of a Prison Governor’ the speaker usual talks for about an hour at 10.30am (see below guest speakers for 2024).

As well as the speaker meetings and various trips out the group enjoy a fortnightly sociable lunch and play snooker twice a week during the winter and bowls during the summer. It’s not just about the activities; it’s about the laughter and companionship shared among like-minded individuals. Norman Ellis, the club’s Treasurer, highlights the joy of socializing during breaks in games.

New members, retired or semi-retired, are warmly welcomed to experience the club’s camaraderie and diverse activities. Guests can attend their first two meetings free of charge and without obligation. For more information, visit https://www.timperleyprobus.co.uk/ or contact David, the club’s Secretary, at 0161 973 9648 or via email at [email protected]. Join us and discover the joys of Probus!
