Stroke Survivors

Almost seven years ago, Nick Davis had a life-changing stroke at 48 and now runs a support group for younger stroke survivors in Altrincham Trafford.

Almost 7 years ago, life changed significantly for Nick Davis, a litigation solicitor from Altrincham and father of 4, when he had a stroke aged 48 whilst on an evening out with friends.  Such was the effect of his stroke that he had to learn to speak the English language again and give up his profession caused by the impact of the stroke on his concentration.

After around 12 months, Nick’s life started getting back to a sense of normality when he was allowed to drive again and regained some independence.

Due to having been isolated and unable to get out of the house for some time, Nick decided to contact Different Strokes, a charity dedicated to supporting younger stroke survivors, and went to visit them at their Headquarters in Milton Keynes to understand what their groups entailed.  Different Strokes didn’t have an active group in the Trafford area, so with their advice, along with support from the Stroke Association and the Community Stroke team, he set about organising his own group to support younger stroke survivors in his community.

Nick’s group started a year ago with 3 or 4 younger stroke survivors between the ages of 40 and 70.  Meeting every Friday from 2pm – 4pm in a space kindly offered by the café in Waterstones Altrincham in Trafford, the aim of the group is to connect people, make new friends, and share experiences and regain independence.  There’s no agenda, nothing organised as such, it’s more of a friendly gathering for those attending.  The group has grown and grown, and nowadays it’s attended by up to 20 people from the Trafford area who have all been affected by stroke.

Nick hopes to establish more groups in the future in other areas to make it more accessible for more stroke survivors to regain independence and share experiences.
