Let's Sing for Memories

Home Instead Basingstoke is running monthly fun singing sessions to offer therapy for those living with dementia, and chance for family carers to provide mutual support.

We provide care for the elderly to help them remain comfortable and independent in their own homes for longer.

Singing is good for the brain

Singing, particularly in a group, can help all of us to feel better, but it can be particularly therapeutic for people living with dementia. Singing can:

  • Stimulate brain activity, and improve a person’s sense of wellbeing and general mood
  • Provide an opportunity for self-expression and encourage a feeling of positivity
  • Provide social interaction, help develop and maintain relationships, and combat loneliness
  • Prompt reminiscence, which is in itself a useful activity for those living with dementia

Let's Sing gets off to a swinging start!

Home Instead Basingstoke are specialists in the provision of home care for those living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.  We approached Milestones Museum about a joint event which would build on the museum’s existing reminiscence offering.

The inaugural Let’s Sing for Memories took place in the museum’s central foyer area in March – and what a success it was!  There were around 100 attendees, and everyone had a great time singing and swinging along to old favourites.   Councillor Dan Putty (Mayor of Basingstoke & Deane from May ’24), introduced the event and put in a particularly memorable performance leading from the front, and we are all very grateful for his support.

Let's Sing at Milestones Museum

With Milestones Museum we are now staging monthly Let’s Sing events, for smaller pre-booked groups.  It is hoped that, as well as providing great therapeutic benefits for those living with dementia, the events will provide valuable support for family carers who will be able to meet and support each other, and discuss dementia care with Home Instead staff.

Attendance is free but by arrangement (because we need to manage numbers) – please text Janet on 07540 975 094 or email [email protected]
