Our experienced team has been providing home help services to the people of Basingstoke and the surrounding areas of north Hampshire since 2015. Elderly home help can be an ideal way to introduce a loved one to the idea of care support at home. A little housekeeping a few times a week, helping to prepare a meal or helping with the laundry, can set a client up on a care journey which provides the ongoing relationship-based care needed to keep them happy and independent at home. Why home help? Many people might see this as a cleaner’s role, but when we assist with housework it will be from the perspective of a trained and experienced care professional whose objective is to keep an eye on her elderly client’s overall wellbeing.

Managing the home can become unrealistically arduous for the elderly. A trained carer can help ensure the home remains the safe and comfortable place that it should be: keeping it clean, removing trip hazards, doing the more physically demanding tasks or helping to prepare a meal. When our carefully selected and trained carers provide home help it is with a cheery smile and a good dose of companionship, but they will also be looking out for signs of any health concerns and monitoring the client’s demeanour, recording their observations and quickly referring any concerns back to the office for further action. Many clients combine home help with other activities, like medication prompts, personal care or outings.
We offer two types of home care: hourly care, where we visit at set times, or live-in care, where a carer resides in the home. Both are overseen by our care management team and delivered by compassionate Care Professionals. Each care package is made up of of a unique mix services to meet your needs.

John had a history of falls and his family felt he needed care at home, but John was strongly resistant. When they approached us, we learnt that he still did all his own housework, shopping and cooking, but was clearly finding it increasingly difficult. John’s daughter persuaded him to have us in twice a week to do cleaning, washing and ironing “as a trial”. With some negotiation we were able to make John’s house very much tidier; now able to move around more easily, John was no longer at risk of slips and trips. As a more relaxed John came to appreciate his carer’s company, the subject of food came up and it was agreed that the carer would take John shopping in Tadley each week, and help him to prepare his lunches.

John’s story continued …
John’s daughter no longer felt she was permanently “on call” in case John had a fall, and went on holiday for the first time in years. Whilst on holiday she continued to monitor the visit reports via our app, but said she was “at last able to sleep well at night again, even when miles away”. Reminiscing about growing up in Overton and life with his young family in Hook, John asked his carers to take him to see some of his old haunts. This has developed into weekly outings to explore various unusual places to visit in north Hampshire. John has recently asked for his carers to assist him with a shower twice a week, further reducing his risk of falls and enabling him to remain safer at home for longer.
Managing your home to the standards you are used to can become increasingly challenging as mobility, dexterity, stamina and strength are impacted by the ageing process. Home Instead Basingstoke is here to assist with in-home care which feels more like simply having a friend come to do those difficult chores. Along the way we can make homes safer and more comfortable, take a burden off families, and help with nutrition. Assistance with household chores can demonstrate to a loved one that care at home by Home Instead Basingstoke can be a very welcome route to remaining happy and independent at home.
