Now that most covid restrictions are thankfully over, it’s a great time to get back out into the community. There’s lots of good reasons to try and get your ageing loved one out of the house – to meet new friends, learn a new craft or skill, socialise at a lunch club, take part in exercises that can help with strength and balance, or just have fun. Fortunately, Bolton is well served with these types of events so from Harwood to Farnworth, Westhoughton to Blackrod there are places to visit. So, lets have a look at they type of activities you could go to
Coffee mornings are a great way of socialising, and passing the time in a relaxed environment, chatting to friends and catching up on all the local gossip! Many church groups have regular coffee mornings and some have their own cafes that are open every day. Just as an example, the new Triangle Community Church at Doffcocker, has a lovely new café that’s open to all and I can recommend their fabulous cakes!

There’s no doubt about it, regular exercise for older people can be extremely beneficial for health and wellbeing. Not only this but attending one of the available groups is a great way to socialise and meet new people. These classes can include strength and balance classes which are really good to help prevent falls and including stretching and gentle exercises. But any type of exercise is good for you – maybe a dance class would be more your thing or walking football. Anything that keeps us moving is good. In Bolton, as with the other groups, Age UK Bolton at their Activity Centre in Farnworth and other local places provide regular Exercise Groups, and their Falls Prevention team hold special classes to focus on keeping you safe and from falling! This link here provides more information on the Age UK Bolton Falls Prevention team and their activity programme.

Learning a new skill can be really beneficial for anyone! Have you had a passion for learning something new or developing your skills in a certain way? Maybe it’s art, music, or crafting skill such as knitting or card making. Not only is it great to learn something new, but you will meet likeminded other people and hopefully make new friends! Just some of the classes available in Bolton include from the following –
Many of these cost very little to attend and are available locally.
Lunch Clubs are a great way to socialise whilst enjoying a lunch made for you! Lots of the volunteer groups, together with church groups organise regular lunch afternoons and all are welcome to attend.
