Today at our blog we’re starting the conversation around local activities for seniors. Retirement can open new doors to engaging activities and social interactions, and there’s lots to discover in and around our local area in and around Hanham and Kingswood.

1. Fitness and Exercise

Aquafit, Zumba, Swimming and more.

Kingswood Active Lifestyle Centre has a gym, pool, squash court and offers fitness classes. There is a Senior Membership package available for value for money. Some classes are specifically catered to older adults, these include low-impact Aquafit sessions on Mondays and Fridays from 11:30 am, perfect for gentle exercise. If mobility is an issue, there is a dedicated disabled changing room as well as blue badge parking.

There are several wellbeing activities at Kingsmeadow@Made Forever in Kingswood, including Friendship and Exercise club which combines social interactions with physical activity,making new friends and encouraging wellbeing, and meets every Thursday.

2. Craft, creativity and learning with our local u3a

Eastside Crafters

Creativity flourishes at all ages! The Eastside Crafters is a u3a group that meets at the Kingswood Community Association on the High Street in Kingswood, with a range of activities from knitting, cross stitch to card making, providing a place to share skills and meet other people with similar interests.

Other Bristol u3a groups that meet at nearby Warmley Community Centre include French Conversation in Warmley, Scrabble in Warmley; Painting and Drawing in East Bristol. In fact there is likely something for everyone at the Bristol u3a!

Kingswood Library Craft Group

Take part in arts and crafts at Kingswood Library, who hold weekly groups, where you can connect with others who share your interests or learn a new skill. For more details email [email protected]

3. Community and connection at Hanham

Activities at Hanham Community Centre

This centre is a vibrant hub of activities, for example like offering free live music during weekly lunchtime sessions. There are both short mat bowling and Zumba Gold classes, making fitness fun and accessible. Zumba Gold classes, are a lower-intensity dance workout, and take place at Hanham Community Centre on Thursdays. 

4. The Great Outdoors

Kingswood Ramblers

For nature enthusiasts or those who love to get outdoors in our local area, Kingswood Ramblers offers group walks on various walking trails on weekends and Wednesday evenings, with membership options. Whether it’s a leisurely Sunday stroll or an energetic Wednesday evening walk, there’s something for everyone.

5. Drama and film

Hanham Players

Do you enjoy acting? Or perhaps you are a great stage hand! The Hanham Players are always keen to see new members, so if you would like to get involved whether you have lots of experience or it is something new, get in touch for a warm welcome!

The local Vue cinema at Longwell Green

Enjoy a range of films, take advantage of less busy viewings in the week! Check for latest prices for over 60s. Enquire ahead about open captioned showings that are available every week, as well as infrared technology in some screens for hearing loops. Blue badge parking is also available.

Staying active is important for all ages, but trying something new or continuing to enjoy a hobby is good for us! As we get older it is also important in maintaining physical and mental agility, nurturing mental health, and enjoying communal experiences.
