Discover how Home Instead Bristol North is leading the way in dementia awareness and bringing the immersive "Virtual Dementia Experience" to Henleaze this August.
An immersive experience offering a rare opportunity to step into the shoes of someone living with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia is making its way to Henleaze.
In collaboration with Training2care, Home Instead Bristol North is bringing the “Virtual Dementia Tour Bus” to St Peter’s Church Car Park on August 28th, 2024.
The entire team at Home Instead Bristol North is thrilled to host this event locally, with support from Bristol Dementia Action Alliance, Alive! Activities, Harold Stephens, and Wards Solicitors.
As local organisations, we are united in our mission to promote awareness, understanding, and empathy for those living with dementia.
The event has captured the attention of our local Bristol community in a remarkable way, filling all available spaces well before the event date. This overwhelming response highlights the significant value of this experience to care professionals, carers, and friends of those living with dementia.
The event includes not only the immersive tour itself but also a debriefing session that offers valuable tips and strategies to create a more supportive environment for those living with the condition.
This unique opportunity allows individuals with healthy brains to experience what life might be like for someone living with dementia. It’s an insightful journey that enables participants to engage with and understand the realities of dementia on a much deeper level.
Dementia is a condition that profoundly impacts those who live with it, as well as their families, friends, and carers. Gaining an understanding of the daily challenges faced by people with dementia is transformative, helping to provide more compassionate and effective care.
The Virtual Dementia Tour is more than just eye-opening—it’s a scientifically-backed initiative developed by Training2care, designed to simulate the experience of living with dementia. This immersive experience is grounded in rigorous research, replicating the sensory and cognitive challenges that individuals with dementia face daily. According to Training2care, the goal of the tour is to help participants truly understand the needs and difficulties of those living with dementia, empowering them to make meaningful changes in their care practices and environments.
With over 200,000 people across the UK participating in the Virtual Dementia Tour annually, it is widely recognised as the gold standard in dementia training. This powerful tool is utilised by NHS Trusts, HSE Trusts, care homes, police forces, universities, and many other organisations to enhance their understanding and support for individuals with dementia.
The Virtual Dementia Tour goes beyond traditional educational methods by offering a profoundly immersive journey into the world of dementia. Through state-of-the-art technology, the tour replicates the sensory and cognitive changes experienced by those living with the condition.
Participants are guided through everyday tasks while confronting challenges like distorted vision, overwhelming noise, and sensory overload. These elements combine to create an authentic and impactful experience that vividly conveys the reality of living with dementia.
Rachel James, Home Instead Bristol North’s Head of Operations and Business Development, expressed her enthusiasm for the event: “We are thrilled by the incredible response to the Virtual Dementia Tour. While our primary goal is to raise awareness, we also aim to equip attendees with practical knowledge and essential tips to support carers, friends, care professionals, and those living with the condition.
The immersive nature of this experience allows participants to gain a deep, empathetic understanding of what it’s like to live with dementia, which is invaluable for anyone involved in caregiving.”
Home Instead Bristol North remains committed to working with local partners and the community to lead the movement for dementia awareness, ensuring that more people gain insights and empathy to support those living with dementia.
