Join Home Instead Bristol North in raising awareness this World Alzheimer's Month.
As we observe World Alzheimer’s Month throughout September, Home Instead Bristol North is dedicated to raising awareness and understanding of this life-changing condition. Our aim is to empower our local team and wider community with the knowledge and compassion needed to better support those affected by dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Ahead of World Alzheimer’s Month, alongside our community partners, we hosted an eye-opening Dementia Experience event in August in Henleaze. Widely recognised as the gold standard in dementia training, taking part in this immersive activity, our team, alongside members of the Bristol Dementia Action Alliance and nine members of the public, we all gained a unique perspective on the challenges faced by those living with dementia.
This experience was both confronting and inspiring, testing our understanding and challenging our perceptions. It provided invaluable insights and empathy into the daily realities of those living with dementia, reinforcing our commitment to delivering compassionate and informed care to our home care clients.
Our team will be wearing purple in the office on World Alzheimer’s Day the 21st of September. Purple is the official colour for this global awareness campaign, symbolising solidarity with those affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia. We aim to encourage conversations about the importance of early diagnosis, the need for continued research, and the value of compassionate, person-centred care.
Our commitment to understanding dementia and Alzheimer’s extends throughout the entire year. At Home Instead Bristol North, we offer a City & Guilds Accredited Dementia Training Course as part of our broader dedication to ongoing training and development.
“We believe that every person living with dementia deserves care that respects their individuality. Our ongoing training ensures our team is fully equipped to provide the highest quality support, enabling our clients to live with dignity and independence.” — Rachel, Head of Operations at Home Instead Bristol North.
Our approach to dementia care at home is shaped by the real experiences of those we support. For example, one client’s wife shared how our services made a difference in their lives:
“Through 2022, my husband’s Alzheimer’s impacted his abilities and behaviour. Home Instead carers came once a week for two hours. Totally calm, competent, and reliable.
One carer played the trumpet, encouraged by my husband on concertina. Great for both of them.
Home Instead staff also supported me. I had several private talks with staff which were very helpful.”
It’s real-life stories like this one that illustrate the positive impact of providing person-centred care that not only supports our clients but also their families.
Join us this World Alzheimer’s Month in raising awareness, building understanding, and making a meaningful impact in our community. This year, as part of the World Alzheimer’s Month initiative by the Alzheimer’s Society, they invite everyone to share personal stories. Whether you are living with dementia, caring for someone with the condition, or have been affected by it in another way, your story can help raise awareness and reduce stigma. Visit the Alzheimer’s Society website to learn more and share your story.
