For many of us, our greatest pride and joy is the home. Keeping on top of the housework only comes naturally to those that want to maintain a well-kempt humble abode. But as we age, household chores can become more of a burden.
When age takes its toll, it’s difficult to stop your faculties from declining. Movements take longer, muscles can become stiff and our sense of balance is often weaker. Perhaps that chore that you could do in a flash years ago now takes an hour. Having to keep up with the constant dusting, washing and ironing when you can’t help but do it at a slow pace can make housework incredibly time-consuming.
It’s only natural to spend the run up to old age fantasising about what life will be like when work is behind you. Whether it’s spending more time on the golf course, volunteering in the community or meeting up with family more, we deserve to spend time doing what we love best when we reach that stage of life. But when it takes so much time to maintain a home, it can feel like you’re not retired at all. Asking for help to support with these household tasks is how you can enjoy the retirement you always dreamt of.
Needing home help isn’t the same as requiring care. You can be perfectly capable of looking after yourself, but just require somebody to pay regular visits and pick up some of the chores. It really does a lot for your mental wellbeing to wake up in the morning and know that instead of having to clean the bathroom you have the freedom to do what you love.
“My Mum has Alzheimer’s so everyday tasks are difficult. My Mum is unable to do everyday tasks like personal care, cooking meals, keeping the house clean etc. The carers do all of these things.”Linda, daughter of a Home Instead client (Wimbledon & Kingston)
Spending your later years at home does so much to maintain your happiness and independence. But not only that, the home is something many of us take pride in. There’s no reason why that shouldn’t continue as we get older. The difficulties of keeping on top of the housework as we age can be unavoidable and receiving some home care support like this stops it from being a burden.
