What is domestic care?

Many people need some form of assistance from age 65 and up, and domestic care is designed to support older adults in keeping a clean and tidy living space. Our Care Professionals take time to learn exactly how you like things done around your home, and help you to remain independent by providing flexible domestic care that can be adapted as your needs change.

Domestic care might include tasks such as:

  • Removing clutter around the home
  • Doing the dishes
  • Dusting surfaces
  • Mopping floors or vacuuming carpets
  • Doing laundry and ironing
  • Meal preparation and cooking
  • Emptying bins and putting them out for collection
  • Changing light bulbs and device batteries
  • Changing bedding and linens
  • Grocery shopping and other errands
  • Feeding family pets

Why is domestic care helpful for older adults?

Doing housework can positively impact health (according to a 2023 study), but housekeeping can be challenging for older people who live with physical or mental health issues that impact their ability to look after their home. By reducing the amount of strenuous chores, providing companionship and allowing you time to rest, domestic care could make a big difference to your quality of life.

Domestic care helps to create a welcoming and pleasant atmosphere at home, enabling you to spend more quality time with loved ones, avoid fatigue, and rest to improve your health. Regular visits from one of our Care Professionals can help to maintain your independence so you can continue to live in the home you love, and keep it spotlessly clean.

Do I need domestic care?

According to a 2020 study, decluttering can help older people retain a sense of control over their life as they age. However, many are reluctant to delegate chores, even though doing so can be life changing for those with health or mobility issues.

There are a number of reasons someone might need domestic care. For example, perhaps you are living with dementia which limits your ability to organise and pay attention to details, or you feel at risk of a fall when carrying out physical tasks (1 in 3 adults aged 65+ have at least one fall a year), or maybe you simply want to have someone manage tiresome chores to give you more time to enjoy life.

Whatever your circumstances, domestic care can help to maintain your health and wellbeing for longer.

Diane WIlliams , Head of Quality & Standards

I have worked with Home Instead since July 2016 as a member of the Quality Team, taking the role of Head of Quality & Standards in 2020.

Before joining Home Instead, I built a comprehensive career in the social care sector, beginning in 1991 as a frontline care worker and advancing to senior leadership roles across both private and voluntary sector businesses.

Throughout my career, I have supported diverse care groups in a variety of settings, including community, residential, nursing, and secure environments. My experience spans working with older adults, including those living with dementia; individuals with physical disabilities and complex, long-term health needs; people with learning disabilities, including autism; individuals with enduring mental health challenges; individuals with current or past substance use and those with forensic backgrounds.

In 2002, I qualified as a social worker and have since maintained my professional registration with Social Work England.
