MND is a neurological condition that affects the brain and nervous system. It causes muscles to weaken, stiffen and waste away, getting worse over time. It is a rare condition that affects roughly 1 in 50,000 people in the UK a year, most commonly those in their 60s and 70s.Symptoms often begin gradually, and can include a weakened grip and weak ankles, slurred speech, weight loss, and difficulty lifting arms and legs. Although there is no pain, over time it may become hard to move, communicate and breathe. There is currently no cure, but there are treatments to help those with MND manage their symptoms.
MND care is there to support you in any way you need. From assistance with daily tasks such as household cleaning, laundry, personal care, medication administration, meal preparation or assistance with mobility and getting out into the community, to more specific support around complex health needs such as catheters, gastrostomy tubes or non-invasive ventilation methods. We are even there to support you with any rehabilitation programmes or palliative stages you may be following.
Our Care Professionals are fully trained in your specialist care needs to support you in the best way, often relieving pressure on family caregivers. Evidence suggests effective support helps reduce the number of possible complications and the need for hospital admissions.
Receiving health care from Home Instead allows you to maintain your independence, routine, and lifestyle to help you live your best life at home. MND affects how muscles work, which means that the symptoms can affect any area of the body that uses muscles. This may result in issues in how you move, talk, eat, drink, or breathe. Symptoms can affect people differently, and not everyone will have the same ones. Our Care Professionals will always work with you and your clinical team to provide you with effective care at home, depending on your symptoms.
Symptoms of Motor Neurone Disease increase as the disease progresses, meaning you may need more care and assistance as time goes on. Getting support with your daily tasks can help you and your loved ones focus on enjoying life in the comfort of your own home.
Motor Neurone Disease is a life changing illness with multiple symptoms that require emotional and physical support. Home is often better suited for the sufferers of MND as they have a more comfortable place to receive care, in familiar surroundings with their loved ones close by.
