What is hospice care at home?

Hospice care–sometimes called palliative care or end-of-life care–is a type of bespoke care for anyone with a terminal illness, and this can take place in their own home where they can be surrounded by their loved ones and treasured belongings. It often involves:

  • Managing pain, symptoms, medication and side effects to ensure comfort
  • Coordinating visits from healthcare professionals and support workers
  • Providing emotional support for the person and their loved ones
  • Adapting the home to create a safe environment
  • Providing enriching activities to improve quality of life

Around 71% of people with a terminal diagnosis prefer to receive palliative care at home instead of a hospice, so this is an important service that prioritises their personal wishes.

Why is hospice care at home beneficial?

Hospice care at home may be put in place when an individual has been given a terminal diagnosis and is approaching the final months, weeks or days of their life. The benefits of this type of care include gaining a better understanding of the trajectory of the condition and treatment, emotional support for the whole family, a potential increase in quality of life for some patients, reduced hospital admissions, and more.

Aside from these benefits, patients receiving hospice care at home can also continue to enjoy hobbies, make use of their own belongings, see loved ones and members of their community, and maintain control of how they spend their time. For many people, hospice care at home can be a comforting presence for everyone involved.

What is the difference between palliative care and hospice care?

The phrase palliative care is often associated with terminal illnesses, however it can also be used to manage pain and symptoms in someone who does not have a terminal illness. Hospice care, or end-of-life care, is solely about prioritising treatments that will increase a person’s comfort and wellbeing during the course of a terminal illness. Staying at home to receive this care often allows them to feel safe and connected to loved ones.
