Winter Safety Tips for Seniors

We are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of seniors during the colder months. Here are some practical and effective ways to help your loved ones this season.

Winter in Central Hampshire presents unique challenges, at Home Instead Central Hampshire, we are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of seniors during the colder months.

Here are some practical and effective ways to help your loved ones maintain their physical and mental health and safety throughout the winter season.

Prioritise Health and Wellness

Cold weather and seasonal illnesses can take a toll on seniors’ health. Make sure they are prepared:

  • Stock Their Medicine Cabinet: Ensure they have the necessary medication for high temperatures, coughs, colds, sore throats, and upset stomachs. However, if symptoms persist for more than a few days, encourage a visit to the pharmacist.
  • Keep Vaccinations Current: Verify that your loved one has had their flu jab.

Keep the Home Warm and Safe

  • Use draft excluders to help your home retain heat.
  • Dress in warm layers, even indoors, and have blankets readily available.
  • Schedule an annual service for boilers and heaters.
  • Check fire alarm batteries. You can apply for a ‘Safe and Well’ visit from the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (click here for a link to online form)
  • Install and test carbon monoxide detectors regularly.
  • If using portable heaters, use them cautiously and be sure to follow safety instructions.

Stay Active and Socially Connected

Isolation during the winter months can negatively impact mental health. Help your loved ones maintain social connections:

  • Encourage regular phone calls, video chats, or in-person visits.
  • Suggest joining local social groups or participating in activities designed for seniors. We offer several Singing for the Brain groups across the Central Hampshire area (visit our Facebook to learn more).
  • Check in frequently to ensure they feel supported and cared for.

Protect Against Falls and Accidents

Winter weather increases the risk of slips and falls. Here’s how to help:

  • Clear walkways of snow and ice, using salt or sand for traction.
  • Ensure they wear sturdy, non-slip footwear when going outside.
  • Avoid venturing out in icy conditions unless necessary.

Be Prepared for Emergencies

Unpredictable weather can lead to power outages or other emergencies. You may be eligible for The Priority Services Register (PSR).  A free UK service that provides extra support and advice for customers who are most at risk if their energy is cut off (register here).

  • Keep torches, batteries, and warm blankets accessible.
  • Stock up on non-perishable food and bottled water.
  • Ensure mobile phones are fully charged and emergency contacts are up to date.
  • Keep a list of emergency contacts next to your telephone and any medical conditions on your fridge.

Practice Good Hygiene and Health Precautions

Winter is the peak season for colds and flu. Help minimise the risk of illness:

  • Wash hands frequently, especially after outings or with visitors.
  • Avoid visiting if you are feeling unwell to prevent spreading germs.

If you have concerns about your loved one’s health, don’t hesitate to call their GP for advice. Support is also available through NHS111, even during evenings, weekends, and holidays.
