Keeping Our Elderly Loved Ones Well and Happy This Summer

Summer is a wonderful time to enjoy the warmth, sunshine, and outdoor activities. At Home Instead Charnwood, we are committed to ensuring that our elderly community not only enjoys this beautiful season but does so in a safe and healthy manner. Here are some essential tips to keep our elderly parents and loved ones living well this summer, along with heartwarming stories of our clients and care professionals enjoying the sunshine

Our Summer Top Tips!

1. Doctors Orders

Regular check-ups with healthcare professionals are crucial. It’s important to maintain routine visits to the doctor and keep up with other check-ups, such as hearing and eyesight. A great way to manage appointments and medications is by keeping a calendar. This helps ensure our loved ones never miss an appointment or take the wrong medication.

2. Keep Physically and Mentally Active!

Encouraging physical activity is vital for both physical and mental well-being. With warmer weather, simple exercises like short walks can be incredibly beneficial. Gardening is another excellent activity that nurtures the body and soul. Additionally, it’s essential to remember to SLIP, SLAP, SLOP! Slip on a shirt, Slap on a hat, and Slop on sunscreen with a high SPF. Protective clothing and hats help protect against harmful UV rays.

3. Maintain a Healthy Diet and Stay Hydrated!

A balanced diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables is essential. The latest advice suggests eating a variety of colourful foods to get a range of nutrients. Hydration is also critical; drinking plenty of water helps regulate body temperature and supports brain function. Encouraging our elderly loved ones to drink water throughout the day is a simple yet effective way to keep them healthy.

4. Companionship!

Social interaction is vital for mental health. Loneliness and social isolation can be detrimental, so engaging in local activities or community-run social groups is beneficial. Whether it’s participating in craft clubs, enjoying a cuppa with a neighbour, or joining our companionship services, staying socially active can significantly enhance the quality of life.
