Students from The Whitby High School demonstrate their caring nature by completing Home Instead's Dementia Craft Challenge.
Dementia is highly prevalent in our ageing population, which is why here at Home Instead we’re committed to helping local groups that provide support to people living with the condition.
It is estimated that almost a million people in the UK now have dementia and someone develops the condition every three minutes. Home Instead has developed its award-winning dementia training for Care Professionals, which allows us to provide high quality dementia care.
We also engage with organisations in the local community, such as MHA Communities, who offer support to people living with dementia and their families. Our dementia craft challenge is one initiative that helps raise awareness of the condition, whilst encouraging people in the community to provide their support.
We were delighted when students from The Whitby High School accepted our challenge to make 10 Twiddle Muffs; knitted woollen muffs with items attached to keep dementia patients’ hands active. They are an extremely beneficial sensory aid.
Our Community Engagement Officer, Jonathan Verhoef, recently presented The Whitby High School with a certificate, following their successful completion of the challenge. Students created ten fantastic twiddle muffs, which were handed to Jonathan by Year 8 Pastoral Leader, Mr Anderson, and students from the school. The beautifully made twiddle muffs were enthusiastically received by MHA Communities Cheshire West, a national charity who provide local support to older people.
Jonathan commented, “Dementia is such a highly prevalent condition among older adults and having the support of our local community really makes a difference to people living with the condition and their families. To have students from The Whitby High School engage with the initiative in such a positive manner is inspiring.
Twiddle muffs are a hugely beneficial sensory device that help keep people’s hands active, and so we were thrilled to receive such brilliantly made examples from The Whitby High School. They’ve really done us proud and I’d like to offer my sincere thanks to the school for their generous support. They’re fantastic.”
