One of our directors here at Home Instead Cuffley, Cheshunt & Harlow, Anita alongside a consultant in rehabilitation medicine, has recently published an article about how to deal with falls in the home. The report looks at the cases of two patients who had mechanical falls at home and their successful use of simple devices such as air mattresses to get up safely off the floor following a fall.
Falls in the community can have major impacts on people’s lives. There can be long lasting physical and psychological consequences of a fall and subsequent long lie. A long lie is when someone remains on the floor for more than one hour after a fall. Affordable devices to help people get up from the floor and reduce the risk of a long lie are available. The report looks at the case of 2 families who successfully used an air mattress and a bath lift to get the fallen person up off the floor following a fall, when they had previously called an ambulance. This has reduced their dependence on the ambulance service and has improved their confidence following falls.
It is a very digestible and easy read for anyone who has had falls previously, or who has a loved one who has been having falls. You can read it here.
