At Home Instead Dartford, we believe that good care is about more than just living safely at home – it’s about connection, comfort, and helping people live with purpose. Consistent, thoughtful care can completely transform a person’s quality of life and help them live life to the fullest.

A Little Support, a Big Difference

Our client, Mary*, first began receiving care from us in December 2021. At 91, she was living with dementia and was showing signs she was struggling. Once a vibrant, independent woman who loved singing, crafts, and time in her garden, she had slowly become more isolated, often sitting in her chair all day, watching TV.

The loss of her son in April 2023 was a heartbreaking moment for the family. It became clear that Mary needed not only support with daily tasks but also emotional connection and companionship. Her family began with just one hourly visit a week from a Care Professional – an approach that helped her ease into the idea of having someone new in her home. At first, we focused on helping with meals and gently encouraging interaction.

Rediscovering Joy

As time went on, something lovely started to happen.

Mary began to look forward to her visits. She sang old cockney rhymes with her Care Professional, took part in colouring activities, and slowly started to re-engage with the world around her. These simple, meaningful moments sparked joy and helped boost her confidence.

As her health changed, so did her care needs. After being hospitalised and fitted with a pacemaker, her family, with our support, decided to transition to Live-In Care.

A New Lease of Life

Having a familiar, trusted Care Professional step into a full-time role made all the difference. With someone there every day, Mary’s world grew bigger again.

She started going for walks into the village, at first in a wheelchair, but soon with her walking stick, which she preferred. She took pride in her appearance once again, enjoyed dressing up, and joined in with singing groups and our Silver Birch Lunch Club. At one of our Multi-Generation Groups, surrounded by children, she smiled and said it reminded her of working in a nursery, something she did for 20 years.

Her days became filled with more colour, more conversation, and a lot more laughter.

Care That’s Felt, Not Just Seen

The changes haven’t gone unnoticed. Her Care Professionals have shared how much more independent and upbeat Mary is now; eating well, staying hydrated, and enjoying everything from music sessions to helping with small tasks around the house.

Most importantly, she smiles more. She chats, sings, and engages. She’s no longer just existing, she’s living again.

The Impact on Family

For her sons, the transformation has been deeply reassuring. One of them shared how their mum is now much more engaged and content. She’s no longer sitting in silence but actively participating in life. And for the family, knowing she has trusted support around the clock has brought real peace of mind.

Companionship Care That Changes Lives

At Home Instead Dartford, we know it’s the little things that can have the biggest impact; shared songs, warm chats, encouraging smiles. Mary’s journey is a reminder that with the right care, it’s never too late to reconnect with life and rediscover joy.
