Tips for the hot weather

Did you know that older adults generally have a lower body water content than younger people? Having less of a reserve means we can become dehydrated more quickly as we get older. With this in mind here’s some tips:

  • Plan your outings: On hot days, consider planning your activities for the early morning or late afternoon when it’s a cooler temperature.

  • Carry a water bottle: Always have a water bottle with you. Many places in Dudley have refill stations or water fountains and many will happily refill your bottle.

  • Dress lightly: Wear light, breathable clothing and a hat to protect yourself from the sun.

  • Take regular breaks: Find shaded spots or air-conditioned spaces to rest and avoid overexertion.

  • Eat hydrating foods: Opt for foods with high water content, like fruits and salads, to help stay hydrated. Watermelon, strawberries, oranges, melons, and grapes are all over 80% water and can help keep you hydrated.

  • Keep blinds and curtains closed: During the day, keep your blinds or curtains closed to block out the sun and prevent your home from heating up. This can significantly lower indoor temperatures and keep your living space cooler

Whether you’re discovering the local history, taking a leisurely walk in the park, or simply enjoying a cold drink, Dudley has plenty of options that can be suitable for older adults where you can also stay cool. Stay cool, stay safe, and make the most of what Dudley has to offer this summer!
