What is Singing for the Brain?

Singing for the Brain is a community gathering centred on the power of music. Each session comes alive with the strumming of a guitar and the collective voice of the community, creating an environment of joy, acceptance, and togetherness. Individuals living with dementia, their carers, and family members are all invited to join in the fun, sing along, or even just tap their feet to the rhythm.

The Power of Music for Dementia

We know that music has a profound effect on our brains, emotions, and memories, especially for those living with dementia. Engaging with music can stimulate memory recall, evoke emotions, and offer an opportunity for non-verbal expression, reducing feelings of anxiety and isolation. These benefits align perfectly with Home Instead’s person-centred approach to dementia care, focusing on living well with the condition.

Our Singing for the Brain sessions provides a safe, supportive environment for those living with dementia to engage in joyful, therapeutic activity. We accompany our clients to these sessions, ensuring they feel supported, engaged, and most importantly, enjoy every moment.

A Testament to the Power of Community

During Dementia Action Week in May 2023, a successful event in Epping Forest saw Singing for the Brain take centre stage. A Council spokesperson commended the event:

“Saturday’s event was another excellent opportunity for local residents affected by dementia to find out what vital services are available within the district. Everyone involved was delighted to offer information, advice, and immediate support to so many people. It was a great way to kick off Dementia Action Week, and we look forward to holding more events like this in the future.”
