Winter Won’t Slow Us Down! Staying Active in Mind and Body This Winter

Stay engaged and active this winter with Home Instead Epping. Fun ways to keep both mind and body sharp, whether at home or in the community.

When the days are short and temperatures drop, it’s easy to stay indoors and hibernate. But keeping both mind and body active is essential for staying well. At Home Instead Epping, we encourage our clients to engage in activities that keep their minds sharp and their bodies moving. From a game of chess to a sing-along or a session of soft mat bowls, there are plenty of ways to stay active this winter.

Soft Mat Bowls – A Weekly Routine

Max, one of our Care Professionals, takes his client Clive to a soft mat bowls club in North Weald every Tuesday. Clive used to drive himself, but now relies on Max to get him there.

The change in Clive’s mood is obvious as soon as he steps into the club. He’s greeted warmly, and once he’s in the game, his focus is sharp. He’s been playing for years and often lands the Jack. For someone who can be reserved, the bowls club is where he comes to life.

Memory Lane and Singing for The Brain – Social and Engaging

Our free Memory Lane Cafe and Singing for the Brain sessions bring people together through music and conversation. Care Professional Carol has noticed a big change in her client Stephen, who once avoided social events. Now, not only does he look forward to these gatherings, but he also takes the time to dress for the occasion and even performs songs for the group.

For the past six months, Stephen has led the singing group in song, with everyone joining in. The support and applause he receives boost his confidence and make a real difference to his well-being. Well done Stephen!

The Benefits of Board Games

Board games aren’t just entertaining – they keep the mind active. Care Professional Roger plays chess with his client Alex, who at 102 years old, still enjoys the strategy and challenge of the game.

“Chess keeps Alex focused and competitive,” says Roger. “He loves the challenge, and it’s great to see.” We think Roger enjoys the games just as much! Meanwhile, Alex’s wife gets a little time to herself, knowing he’s engaged and enjoying himself.

Sparkles Magazine – A Monthly Read

Our free Sparkles Magazine is filled with nostalgic stories, quizzes, and crosswords, perfect for a little mental exercise. Clients who receive Sparkles enjoy looking back on past events, chatting about the articles with their Care Professionals, and testing themselves with the brain teasers. Any extra copies go to dementia community groups, extending the benefits even further.

Staying Active at Home

Staying active doesn’t always mean heading out. There are plenty of ways to keep the mind and body engaged from the comfort of home. Simple chair exercises, stretching routines, or even dancing to a favourite song can boost physical well-being. Reading, puzzles, and a good chat over a pot of tea makes all the difference. Keeping a routine and setting small, enjoyable goals each day can make all the difference.
