Debs: A Shining Light at Home Instead Epsom

Meet Debs, our Care Pro of the Year.

How the Journey Began

When Debs joined the care profession in October 2022, she expected to support elderly clients, offering companionship and assistance with daily living. But her first assignment with Alex, a 40-year-old man with visual impairment and frontal lobe damage, led her on an unexpected and deeply rewarding journey.

Despite initial nerves, Debs approached the role with determination, learning quickly how to meet Alex’s unique needs. His condition affects his memory, emotional regulation, impulse control, and social interactions.  But through patience, empathy, and unwavering commitment, Debs became a pillar of stability in his life.

When Debs first met Alex, he was quiet, anxious, and hesitant to engage. Over time, her consistency and warmth helped him open up, and their relationship has blossomed into one of trust and mutual respect. She encourages him to take part in activities he might otherwise avoid, giving his days more structure and purpose.

A standout memory was their visit to see the Bob Marley film earlier this year. As lifelong music enthusiasts with a shared love for reggae, the experience was more than just a day out—it was a moment of pure connection. Alex’s happiness throughout the film reflected just how much these shared experiences mean to him.

Debs embodies everything Home Instead stands for—positivity, professionalism, and a person-centred approach. She faces challenges head-on, always putting AF’s needs first. Her ‘can-do’ attitude not only benefits her clients but also inspires her colleagues. She readily shares her knowledge, mentoring others on how to build rapport and provide the best possible care.

Her commitment to continuous learning ensures she stays well-equipped to navigate the complexities of care. Through e-learning modules and hands-on experience, she’s always striving to improve and adapt.

Recognition from Alex and His Family

Debs’ dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. Alex’s mother has expressed immense gratitude for the positive energy she brings to her son’s life, recognising her as a vital part of his support network. She highlighted Debs’ ability to keep him safe, well, and happy, praising the trust and understanding she has fostered.

Even Alex himself—who struggles with trust—acknowledges the special bond they share. In his own words:

“She has a very loud personality, very outgoing and bubbly. She sticks up for things if she thinks they aren’t right. She’s always willing to jump in no matter the cost and loves a good hug when times are tough.”

This heartfelt appreciation speaks volumes about the impact Debs has made.
