Creating a Dementia Aware business community

Our popular Dementia Awareness talks go 'on tour' for the business community

East Devon has one of the highest rates of Dementia diagnosis in the UK, with Alzheimer’s Research UK* suggesting that one in two of us will be affected by dementia in our lifetime.

As part of our ongoing free Community Talks initiative around ageing well (click HERE for information), we are continuing to encourage discussion around the topic of dementia by further developing our offering, with specific workshops tailored towards the local business community.

After the success of the first event – a breakfast networking and dementia awareness workshop for Sidmouth business members  – we are taking our business workshops ‘on tour’, with events at key venues in towns across the Exeter and East Devon region…

The Sidmouth workshop was kindly hosted by our friends at Sidmouth RFC and was well attended by a cross section of local businesses including Sidmouth Chamber of Commerce members, ranging from hospitality settings, financial and legal advisors and funeral directors, to dentists, home improvement and maintenance contractors, fellow social care professionals and key voluntary organisations such as Sidmouth Hospice at Home. All were looking to gain knowledge around the signs and symptoms of dementia and importantly, to learn vital tips and techniques in how to care for, and communicate with a person living with dementia, as well as creating dementia friendly environments, in an effort to make their town ‘dementia aware’ for all.

Awareness is key to building safer communities, and it is thoroughly encouraging to see the Sidmouth Business members respond so positively. It is our goal for those living with Dementia to feel that they are welcome in their wider community, and that they can trust their ‘high street’ to offer them a warm and understanding welcome, whichever service they are seeking.

All business participants that attend workshops will receive signs and certificates to display, to indicate to potential clients that their teams are ‘Dementia Aware’. Hospitality and leisure organisations also have the option to be added to our list of what we call ‘Client & Care Professional Friendly Venues’ as part of our ‘Out Instead’ project – an initiative that we created to encourage our clients to explore a little more in the interest of wellbeing, with the support of their Home Instead Care Professional.

Follow us on Facebook HERE for dates regarding our future ‘Dementia Aware’ business workshops, coming to a town near you very soon!
