Perfect for a leisurely Client visit
This stunning Georgian house has so much to offer visitors, whether looking for culture, peace and quiet, company, fantastic coffee and cake, and a good dose of history, too…
Killerton is located is Broadclyst, on the outskirts of Exeter – in perfect reach of many of our clients, and easily accessed from all directions of our community across Exeter, east and mid Devon.
There is ample parking on site, including a large area reserved for those wary of walking too far, and for those who are mindful of steps or uneven ground, there are alternative routes to many of the points of interest on the estate.
Further to this, less energetic visitors can take advantage of the free Killerton ‘Tramper’ service – an all-terrain motorised scooter (a little like a golf buggy), which is available to hire (complete with driver) for a morning or afternoon. Visitors just need to call Killerton in advance to make a booking. Speaking about this service, Rhiannon Route (senior Volunteer & Community Manager) said, “The Tramper is really popular and is great fun too. It allows everyone to access the house and gardens easily – just let us know when you would like to visit, and we will do the rest.”
There are areas of the grounds which inevitably have beautiful but somewhat uneven cobbled areas and walkways, such as the approach to the shop and Stables Café but with support, these are accessible to most. Further information can be found via the Killerton Access Guide, HERE. There is also a second coffee stop – Killerton Kitchen Café – located on the ground floor of the House itself, with a completely level approach.
The heart of Killerton is a wonderful, late 18th century Georgian house, which for a large property, has an amazingly homely feel. The history is vast, and the Killerton volunteers that are at hand in each room and area, offer a wealth of information, not only about the property but about the life and character of past residents, all of which adds to the experience.
Of particular note to our visiting Clients and Care Professionals is that each room includes a place to ‘take a seat’ by visitors, who are welcome to rest on any chair that features the Killerton coat of arms. Perfect!
In addition to the attraction of Killerton House itself, it is also home to a large and historically relevant fashion exhibit. For 2023 (11 February – 5 November), the exhibition explores fashion from the 18th century to the present, with over 50 pieces on display. ‘Killerton at Christmas’ offers visitors a real treat as the house is dressed in readiness for the festive season. You can find out more HERE.
What is also wonderful to know, is that Rhiannon and the wider team at Killerton are also keen to become Dementia Aware with Home Instead, to enable yet more members of community to have a truly wonderful and inclusive experience at this beautiful National Trust property.
In addition, the National Trust are keen to encourage visitors and invite carers and companions supporting a member to enter for free. To go one step further, and to speed up the process, the trust have launched their Essential Companion card scheme. The card is issued in the name of the person being supported, meaning that they can simply show the card on arrival and their particular Care Professional or supporting companion on the day, will enter for free. Further details can be found HERE.
Killerton, we look forward to many lovely Client and Care Professional friendly visits in the future…
