Discover how Home Instead Fareham supports active ageing and recovery at home with services tailored to each client’s needs.
Home Instead UK’s recent research, “The New Ageing Index,” has found that people in the UK recognise the importance of staying active as we age, with 89% of over 75s emphasising this desire.
At Home Instead Fareham & Gosport, we support our clients in staying active and maintaining their independence at home and in their community, even into their 80s, 90s, and beyond.
Here, we share the remarkable story of one of our 95-year-old clients. After experiencing a fall, hospital admission and rehabilitation in a care home, he wished to return home. With our support, he was indeed able to return home and to regain an active lifestyle in the area he loves.
Our client Robert*, 95, lives independently at home in Portchester with our support. In 2022, Robert experienced a fall at home, leading to a hospital admission and subsequent stay in a care home for rehabilitation.
Determined to return to the home he loves, Robert achieved this goal in May 2022 with a carefully tailored home care plan consisting of three daily visits by our Care Professionals: morning, lunchtime, and evening.

Initially, Robert’’s home care needs were intensive. His mobility was significantly compromised, requiring the constant use of a walking frame. Our Care Professionals supported him with washing, dressing, meal preparation, and household tasks. The goal was to help Robert regain his strength, confidence, and independence in these key areas.
By late 2023, Robert had made gradual and significant progress. He was able to wash and dress independently and no longer required his walking frame to move around his home.
Robert was also able to return to a weekly lunch club for retired locals; and he has been able to do this independently, without any need for assistance. This is a major milestone in regaining an active lifestyle, especially as he is able to maintain his long-standing friendships in the group and he enjoys dining with others.
More recently, Robert has added a two-hour weekly visit to his care plan with us, allowing him to visit local areas of interest. His outings alongside our Care Professional have included visits to Portchester Castle, the best-preserved Roman fort north of the Alps, and the Royal Armouries Museum at Fort Nelson which houses over 700 pieces of artillery from across the world and spans 600 years of English military history. These weekly excursions allow him to stay active, and also provide opportunities to share his extensive knowledge of local history with his regular Care Professionals, who enjoy accompanying him.
Robert’s gratitude towards his Care Professionals is evident. He recently remarked to our team, “I have been having your Care Professionals visit me three times every day and I very much wish to let you know how extremely pleased I am with all of those who have looked after me here. I could never have carried on without their visits. They are all so friendly, good cooks, tidy workers, not to mention their willingness to carry out any request I may make of them. From the bottom of my heart a very grateful thank you to them all.”
Following a recent outing, he added, “Lisa took me to Fort Nelson this afternoon, and she was so very helpful, and looked after me in such a kindly and friendly manner. Please convey my greatest thanks to her for being so terribly helpful, and looking after me so kindly. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit, and her friendliness was the icing on the cake! It all went towards my having such a lovely and unforgettable birthday!!”
The support Robert has received from his dedicated team of Care Professionals has not only enabled him to return home but also to regain a high degree of independence. His improved mobility, active social life, and enjoyment of local outings are testaments to the power of tailored, relationship-led home care. Robert’s acknowledgment of the importance of this support highlights the effectiveness of the care provided by our wonderful Care Professionals and office team at Home Instead Fareham and Gosport.
Robert’’s journey exemplifies how support to maintain an active lifestyle with dedicated home care visits can lead to remarkable recovery and independence in older age. At Home Instead Fareham, we are extremely proud to be part of such transformative and uplifting stories.
