How we select the best Care Professionals at Home Instead Fareham

Discover how Home Instead Fareham recruits the best Care Professionals using the "mum and dad test," focusing on empathy, transferable skills, and compassionate care.

At Home Instead Fareham, while we recognise the importance of reliability and expertise in delivering excellent home care, we equally value compassion, empathy, and a genuine desire to make a positive impact.

We take great pride in offering relationship-led care that is personalised to each individual, and our recruitment process is designed to reflect these values. Every step we take ensures that the Care Professionals we welcome to our team embody the qualities that we believe make Home Instead Fareham truly exceptional.

The 'Mum and Dad Test'

Our recruitment process begins with an informal chat, usually with our Recruitment Manager Mollie, where we get to know the candidate’s motivations for applying. What we’re really looking for is what we call “the mum and dad test”—would we feel comfortable having this person care for our own parents? It’s a straightforward but essential question that helps us to start the process, and we continually apply throughout our recruitment’. It’s simple but powerful: would we be comfortable with you caring for our own mother? It’s a benchmark that ensures we’re all striving for the highest standard of care and compassion.

Our goal is to find people whose skills and attitude align with our core mission of providing compassionate, person-centred care.

The power of transferable skills

Many of our candidates come from a variety of career backgrounds. While prior care experience is always a plus, because we offer award winning training, it's not always a requirement. We're particularly interested in transferable life skills that show a capacity for patience, empathy, and managing complex situations.

Introducing our Care Professional Rosie

Meet Rosie, one of our recent recruits! Rosie didn’t have any formal care experience before joining us, but her background in customer service has proved invaluable.

Following her training, and shadowing with our team, we introduced and paired her with our clients, a lovely husband and wife, where the wife had been diagnosed with dementia two years earlier. Her husband was finding it increasingly difficult to manage the emotional and physical toll of caring for his wife, and although he desperately needed support as a family caregiver and respite, he struggled to step back and allow others to help.

From day one, Rosie’s caring nature and practical skills have shone through. She has quickly established a strong bond with the couple, becoming a vital part of their support system. Rosie has often taken our client on outings, giving her husband the chance to recharge and enjoy some of his favourite hobbies, such as walking the dog and gardening. Rosie’s presence has not only eased the practical challenges but also brought a ray of sunshine, and given the couple a sense of comfort and trust.

Stories like Rosie’s highlight how our approach to recruitment isn’t just about filling roles; it’s about finding the right people who will thrive in the unique challenges and rewards of home care, and make a huge difference to our clients.

We’re so proud and delighted to have Rosie as part of our team, we know that when someone truly cares like she does, it shines through in everything they do!

Ongoing support and training

Once a new Care Professional has passed through our interview process and checks to join our team, we invest in their growth and success.

Every new starter receives our award winning training to ensure that they have the skills needed, and our support doesn’t stop there. Throughout the first few months, we ensure that every Care Professional is guided and supported as they settle into their role.

Our local office team is always available, managing care plans, training, schedules and checking in with clients and Care Professionals. This ongoing contact helps us maintain the high standards that have earned Home Instead Fareham & Gosport an ‘Outstanding’ rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and excellent reviews at homecare.co.uk.
