Changing Attitudes to Ageing: Staying Well at Home in Havant

The New Ageing: Discover how Home Instead research shows changing attitudes to ageing and how we support older adults in Havant to stay active and healthy at home.

In today’s world, the traditional image of ageing is changing rapidly. Our recent research at Home Instead UK, highlighted in “The New Ageing Index,” reveals how perspectives on ageing are shifting, especially among older adults who express a desire to stay active and healthy at home.

Changing Attitudes to Ageing

Embracing active ageing is essential for staying healthy as we age. At Home Instead Havant, we wholeheartedly support this philosophy, championing the benefits of healthy lifestyle choices for physical and mental wellbeing, as well as leveraging advancements in medical science.

Home Instead UK’s research provides some intriguing insights: over 66% of respondents believe diet and exercise are key to staying vibrant, a sentiment echoed by 76% of caregivers looking after an older family member. An average 85% agree with the need to stay active and that rises to 89% among over 75s. Additionally, a heartening 67% of those over 75 express optimism that both lifespan and healthspan will significantly improve in the coming decade.

These findings suggest that the traditional image of ageing is changing, and so too should the traditional perceptions of home care. At Home Instead Havant, we’ve always been dedicated to supporting our clients in doing the things that matter most to them, helping older adults to remain independent at home and in the community.

Staying active locally

Inspired by what we’ve heard in this research, we’ve put together a list of some local activities suitable for older adults in Hayling, Havant, Emsworth, Waterlooville and our local area, to stay active and engaged:

Local Walking Groups: Walking is such a good way to stay active and enjoy our local area. Different groups and walks are available to suit various fitness levels, for example the Ramblers Havant Wellbeing Walks and the Waterlooville Strides (u3A) organise regular walks. These gatherings offer a fantastic opportunity to socialise, enjoy the fresh air, and stay physically active in later life.

Local Clubs and Societies: For those seeking a wider range of regular groups, courses, activities, local clubs and societies like the Hayling Island Community Centre and Waterlooville Community Centre offer different options. Groups such as Waterlooville U3AEmsworth U3A and Havant U3A provide excellent avenues for learning and socialising.

Leisure Centres: Our area boasts some exceptional leisure centres, such as the Havant Leisure Centre (PO9 2AY) and Waterlooville Leisure Centre (PO7 7UW). These centres offer numerous fitness classes tailored to different interests. For those who find solace in yoga and pilates, the Hayling Island Yoga Studio (PO11 9) and Havant Wellness Centre (PO9 1) come highly recommended.

Gardening Clubs: Green fingered gardeners will find kindred spirits at the allotments or horticultural societies. These groups not only provide a therapeutic gardening experience that keeps us active, but also can give the chance to connect with fellow enthusiasts.

With many more options available, maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle as we age is not just possible but also enjoyable. Whether you enjoy walking, fitness classes, or gardening, there are many activities to research that can motivate and inspire us to stay active as we get older, within our local community.
