Summer for Older Adults in Hereford, Ross-on-Wye, and Ledbury

Discover tips and local spots for older adults to stay cool and enjoy the summer in Hereford, Ross-on-Wye, and Ledbury.

Summer has arrived in Hereford, Ross-on-Wye, and Ledbury! At Home Instead, we’re dedicated to ensuring our clients enjoy the summer months comfortably.

Whether it’s supporting our clients to venture out safely or helping our vulnerable adults stay cool indoors, we’ve got some local recommendations for summer outings and tips to help everyone stay cool and hydrated.

The cooling benefits of trees

Did you know that trees not only provide shade but also cool the air through a process called transpiration? When water evaporates from the leaves, it takes energy with it, reducing peak temperatures by 1-5°C.

Sitting in the shade of a tree in your garden is a simple summer pleasure enjoyed by our clients and Care Professionals.

The cooling benefits of trees

Locally, here are a few wonderful tree-shaded spots to help us stay cool on warmer days:

Queenswood Country Park and Arboretum, near Leominster: An arboretum is wonderful for nature lovers, and here you’ll find a diverse collection of trees that provide lots of shade. The arboretum showcases over 1,200 rare and exotic trees, you can take a leisurely stroll with benches to rest, or hire a mobility scooter (you need to book in advance) and use the accessible trails. If you love birdwatching, bring your binoculars!

The Weir Garden, near Hereford: This National Trust Property is located near Hereford, and at the bottom of the garden there is a small woodland and stunning views of the River Wye, shaded path with a variety of trees. There is also a Bird Hyde where you can sit quietly and watch the garden birds on feeders.

Wye Valley

Hellens Manor, Near Ledbury:  The gardens and tea rooms at Hellens Manor are open free to the public during the summer, on limited days of the week. The gardens include ancient trees and shaded areas, offering a peaceful spot to explore the beautifully maintained grounds.

Ross-on-Wye Bandstand: Near the Riverside scenic walk, the area around the bandstand has some shaded areas around the edges and free Sunday afternoon summer concerts. Take your camping chair!

Warm weather tips for older adults

– Stay hydrated: Drink water and squash regularly, avoiding caffeine and alcohol. Ice poles or flavoured ice cubes can also help to stay cool and increase your fluid intake. When going out, bring a water bottle with you and take regular breaks.

– Eat hydrating foods: Boost hydration by including foods with high water content in your diet, such as cucumbers, salads, strawberries, and watermelons.

– Keep your home cool: Close blinds and curtains to block out the sun.

– Quick cool down: Use damp cloths on your wrists and neck or take a cool shower/shallow bath if you’re feeling hot.

– Summer clothing: Wear lighter coloured, loose clothing in breathable fabrics. Wear a hat outside to protect from the sun.
