Keep your seniors active and engaged with some of these senior-friendly activities around the Huntingdon area.
There is a saying that old habits die hard, but we much prefer it’s antonym; ‘it’s never too late to mend, you are never too old to learn’. The simple truth is that you can never be too old to learn new things, and older people are constantly doing things that we typically associate with younger people such as learning to skydive or learning a new language. Some of the easiest and most overlooked skills that older people can learn are often relatively simple creative activities, such as how to stitch, bake cakes or even paint!
As you get older it becomes even more important to keep yourself engaged, and few activities are more beneficial for this than learning a new skill or activity. Fortunately, for people living around Huntingdon, there are a large number of activities and groups that are specifically designed with older people in mind.
U3A (University of the Third Age) is a UK-wide collection of 1000+ charities that provide opportunities for those no longer in full-time work to come together and learn for fun. Huntingdon U3A has over 50 special interest groups to choose from – ranging from Archaeology and Bird Watching to Line Dancing and Wine Appreciation, there really is something for everyone. The classes and various activities are held at different locations, so we recommend having a browse of their website or giving them a call to talk about your interests and what may be available in your area. There are fees for becoming a member, click here to visit their website and find out more.
RightStart exercise classes are for older people and those requiring additional support to exercise. The classes are friendly and can be a great way to meet and connect with other people who may have similar health and fitness concerns. All the classes are designed and taught by specially qualified instructors who will ensure that the activities are safe, and that they meet your individual physical and medical needs. There are some costs included, all of the information can be found by clicking here. There are also other classes under RightNow that are a variety of classes aiming to get Huntingdonshire residents active. They are all inclusive and low impact, meaning they are perfect for beginners! To add a cherry on top… thanks to funding from Healthy You, they are able to offer some of the newer classes free of charge.
CARESCO is a unique charity based in the village of Sawtry, near Huntingdon, which serves the Sawtry community and it’s satellite villages. Under the CARESCO umbrella are a number of services offered to the local community, including the Green End Day Club, the Cave, a Friday dop-in café and their charity shop which helps fund their activities. The Green End Day Club aims to bring together community members that are looking for a regular day to meet likeminded individuals for friendship, food, and fun. They meet Monday-Friday 10:00-14:00 in the CARESCO Centre in Sawtry, Members are offered transport to the Centre using a dedicated mini-bus with a ramp. The Cave is a place to pursue practical interests at leisure, practise new skills and enjoy making/mending. It is all about building friendships, sharing expertise, and passing on knowledge. The Cave is based at the back of Sawtry Community Centre which is sited in the car park behind the Old School Hall on Green End Road. Click here to view their leaflet. Crafting can be one of the best ways to keep your mind engaged, so why not check out Crafty Monkey. It was established in 2010 and is located in St Neots town centre. They offer fun sessions for all ages and abilities, be it pottery painting, foam clay, build a bear, baby prints, clay imprints, plaster outprints, silverprint jewellery or you can even commission them to hand paint a personalised piece of pottery as a gift. There is something for everyone at Crafty Monkey as they cater for children, adult parties, hen do’s, baby showers, team building events and even offer workshops for children and adults. It could be a great place for seniors to try something new, even if you (or your loved one) are not overly ‘arty’ you would be surprised at how creative you can be in the right environment.
