Going out for dinner and finding somewhere with access for mobility aids can be challenging at times. In an effort to make this easier for you, we’d like to recommend some wonderful spots around Huntingdon with good access for wheelchair users.
DOUGH&co is still relatively new to Huntingdon so if you’ve not had chance to pop by yet, you must! Using ingredients sourced directly from Italy, with real chefs preparing them, their pizzas are then cooked in their very own woodfired ovens. Treat yourself and your loved ones to a pizza in a relaxed and happy environment. Being on one level, it’s easy to access for wheelchair users and the restaurant itself is nice and spacious enough to move around freely. An interesting little fact about DOUGH&co is that they are very environmentally friendly as their wall panelling and tables are made from recycled pallets. They also use reformed briquettes rather than traditional firewood or logs as they don’t emit any smoke, and they have recently moved to recycled cardboard for their take-away boxes; all the more reason to pay them a visit!
This restaurant can be a little deceiving for wheelchair users as there is a step at the front door, however if someone in your party can make the staff aware you’ve arrived, they will open up another door for you to gain entry. They have an incredibly large disabled toilet, and the dining area is very spacious. Planet Spice is beautifully situated in Godmanchester with riverside views, making it a firm favourite for many locals. You can enjoy the much loved traditional and classic Indian dishes, along with unique dishes for those who like to try new things. The restaurant is great to visit any day however if you are visiting at the weekend, we strongly recommend you book in advance as it can get very busy.
Much like Planet Spice, The George in Huntingdon can be deceiving as it has steps leading up to its entrance. Out team have first-hand experience of dining here with wheelchair users, if a member of your party can alert the staff you have arrived, they will bring a ramp outside for you. The George is across multiple floors as it’s also a hotel with 26 bedrooms, but that shouldn’t be a problem as they have a stairlift. The times we have visited the staff have gone out of their way to ensure a wonderful dining experience. If you read our second blog about local historical sites you will know that Huntingdon is spilling over with locations that relate to Oliver Cromwell, The George is one of those as it was originally home to Oliver Cromwell’s grandfather.
Located on Market Hill in Huntingdon, Ephesus is another brilliant location with good access. They have a ramped/sloped entrance and much like the above recommendations the dining area is large and spacious. They have a lovely disabled toilet and we’ve noted that the staff are incredibly helpful should you require additional support. Access aside, this restaurant comes highly recommended as the food is lovely and the service has been brilliant. Their menu is very inclusive to dietary requirements or choices; there is something for everyone at Ephesus.
Pinnies is a truly unique café in Godmanchester. Due to its closing at 2pm most days we can’t recommend it as a spot for dinner, but with the heart-warming backstory of this café we couldn’t miss it off our accessibility list. Pinnies was the brainchild of three Huntingdon Mencap staff who had a dream to open a tearoom where all were welcome. They have done incredibly because that dream has become a reality. What makes Pinnies so unique is that both customers and staff are an inclusive mix of those with and without learning disabilities. The cherry on top of the cake is that all profits made at Pinnies go back into Mencap to continue providing the service they do.
