Following this year’s Dementia Action Week, which is dedicated to raising awareness, providing relevant information, and encouraging support for people living with dementia, we want to highlight how Home Instead can support our clients living with dementia and introduce some of the local support groups available in and around Ilkeston and Hucknall.
At Home Instead Ilkeston and Hucknall, we understand the importance of supportive environments for those living with dementia, both within the home and through community schemes such as local support groups and activities. These groups provide a sense of belonging and a safe place for everyone impacted by dementia—those living with the condition and those who care for them. Here are a few suggestions;
Location: Arena Church, 1 Rutland Street, Ilkeston DE7 8DG
The Alzheimer’s Society’s Ilkeston Memory Cafe, hosted at the Arena Church, offers a relaxed atmosphere where individuals living with dementia, along with their carers, family, and friends, can chat and share experiences. This community group is a place to ask questions, seek advice, and exchange valuable information.

At the same venue, Singing for the Brain sessions provide an entertaining and interactive experience. Research indicates that singing improves brain activity, wellbeing, and mood. These group sessions are run by experienced leaders and require no singing expertise—it’s all about participation and the therapeutic benefits of music.

We personalise our care at home to our clients’ individual care needs and their interests. For example one of our local clients is living with dementia, and as she loves being out and sociable, we are able to support her to get out and about to her favourite places. She enjoys going to the local farm, the charity shops and to the duck ponds, all are possible with her Care Professional.
She also enjoys singing and dancing, and our Home Instead Ilkeston and Hucknall Care Professionals make a fuss over her by putting on some music in her home, and having a waltz. Another activity that brings a smile, is writing about her life journey, and with the help of the companionship enjoyed with her regular Care Professionals she is able to share her memories and reminisce.
We know it’s the attention to each person as an individual that makes the difference to the care we give, and our client looks forward to our visits and always has a smile on her face. One of her Care Professionals even bought her a baseball cap after she admired the one he was wearing, and she now wears it with pride.
