BT Tower calls for Noel

79-year-old Noel from Ipswich, a former BT worker, was granted his wish to step back in time when he visited the BT Tower in Martlesham, where he worked for 30 years.

The private tour was organised by Home Instead Ipswich, Woodbridge, and Felixstowe, who provide live-in care for Noel, enabling him to continue living in his own home. He was accompanied by his daughter, who was interested in seeing where her father had spent so many years of his career.

Noel had often shared stories about his time with BT, including memories of the late Queen opening the building 50 years ago. Keen to help Noel reminisce, the visit was arranged with the help of site manager Terry, who was delighted to facilitate the experience at the now Adastral Park.

On arrival, Noel reconnected with a former colleague, Dennis, who remembered him well. Dennis walked Noel through a mini museum showcasing the history of BT at the site, featuring old photographs, equipment, and materials salvaged over the years. This allowed Noel to take a nostalgic journey back to his working days.

A full “access all areas” tour followed, including a drive around the site, past high-security areas where new technology is tested. The highlight of the day was a trip inside the tower, no longer in use by staff, where the group enjoyed panoramic views for miles.

During the visit, Terry presented Noel with a commemorative mug from the tower’s 40th anniversary celebrations.

Sophie Martin, Marketing Coordinator at Home Instead, reflected on the experience:
“What a lovely day out for us all, especially Noel.

“It was heartwarming to hear his many stories about working on the site and to see him reconnect with Dennis.

“Our thanks go to the site team at Adastral Park for creating such a personalised and memorable experience for Noel and his family.

“Reminiscing is so important as people age, and it was wonderful for Noel’s daughter to learn more about his working life and hear stories, like how he cycled to work and around the site.

“This trip is a great example of how we go above and beyond to enrich the lives of our clients.”
