How did you hear about Home Instead? Online recruitment
What prompted you to apply for the role? To be perfectly truthful, I was looking for a third job to help with the cost of living and I felt it was something worthwhile that I could do with my evenings. I have held caring jobs on and off since I was 16, for the last 54 years.
What were you doing before joining Home Instead? I am still an ecologist working as a Farm Conservation Advisor and in a Commercial Tree nursery.
What do you like to do in your spare time and are you able to bring that into your role? I compete at a National level in Working Trials with my dog. It is the civilian equivalent of Police dog work.
What do you enjoy most about the role? The hour-long visits enable us to build a trusting relationship with the clients. The visits are also very varied.
What do you think the benefits are of the role for both you and the client? I am used to talking and working with a variety of farmers and others. I have a long experience of having to build relationships with clients, so I can usually find a subject that builds a bridge between me and our clients. I can converse on any subject really! I am used to cracking on with the job and am used to dealing with rules, regulations and standards.
What activities do you do with your clients? I work in the evenings, so my activities are tailored for nighttime. Usually, we do a lot of laughing and sometimes singing. I make sure I am familiar with their favourite telly programme, so I can discuss with them.
What would you say to anyone who is thinking about a role in care? Do it, it can be very fulfilling!
