A campaign is underway to save the Holy Spirit church hall in Dovecot, with a fundraising target of £150,000. The goal is to buy the Art Deco church hall and vicarage, which the Church of England recently put up for sale, leaving local community groups without a home.
The Holy Spirit church and its adjoining buildings have been a pillar of the Dovecot community. However, the church commissioners, citing declining use, have decided to sell the property, prompting concerns from local residents. The Holy Spirit Church Hall has been the centre of the Dovecot community since its consecration in 1931.
Stephen Guy, chairman of the West Derby Society, voiced the community’s determination: “Sadly, the church authorities feel they no longer need to have a presence in Dovecot. However, we are sure the Dovecot community is made of sterner stuff and that they can raise the cash.” He added that a local trust or charity may be able to match community donations, amplifying each contribution.
This campaign isn’t just about preserving a building—it’s about safeguarding a space that has brought people together for generations. Every donation helps bring the community closer to its goal of keeping this space for future generations.
