Sharing stories of dementia care

As this year’s World Alzheimer’s Month draws to a close, we at Home Instead Lancaster are reminded of the importance of sharing stories of alzheimer’s and dementia care, just as the Alzheimer’s Society has encouraged. Dementia affects millions of lives, yet many stories remain untold. By sharing experiences, we can bring dementia out from behind closed doors, helping families understand they are not alone, and that compassionate, expert support is available.

At Home Instead Lancaster, our mission is to provide exceptional dementia care, and our clients’ stories reflect the life-changing impact that personalised care can have. Here are just a few examples of how we’ve supported families through the challenges of living with or caring for someone with dementia.

“The kindness and professionalism were truly impressive” – A D, Husband of Client

For many, the role of family caregiver is not something they expect to take on. It’s a new chapter in a marriage or family dynamic when a loved one becomes unwell. A D’s story may resonate with those who feel isolated in this challenging role. His wife, living with severe dementia, required care at home, and Home Instead was able to step in and provide this, giving him much-needed respite. He shares, “The carers were considerate when dealing with my wife. As the dementia worsened, my wife began to see some of the younger female carers as a threat and became abusive. On contacting Home Instead to discuss this, they immediately sent male carers only, which worked well.”

A D goes on to say, “I, as her husband and main carer, was very impressed by the kindness and professionalism shown by all staff.” His story reminds us that dementia care can be complex, but with tailored approaches and specialist training, we can make life easier for both the individual and their loved ones

“Responsive care that adapted to each stage of my dad’s dementia” – H G, Daughter of Client

Another recent review comes from H G, whose father’s dementia progressed rapidly. She notes the exceptional care provided by Home Instead Lancaster, saying, “Over the past five months, my dad’s dementia has accelerated quickly, and Home Instead has provided exceptional, responsive care at each stage. The communication with the manager has been excellent, and their ability to adapt to changes in my dad’s behaviour – such as arranging a sleep-in carer at short notice – has been a lifesaver.”

She concludes with high praise for the entire team, stating, *”The carers have been extremely professional and caring, even when my dad’s behaviour deteriorated. I couldn’t recommend Home Instead highly enough for providing an outstanding service.”* H G’s story illustrates how we are there for families every step of the way, adapting care at home as needs evolve.

“What can I say? Outstanding care in difficult times” – H M, Daughter of Client

One recent review came from the daughter of a client whose mum struggled after her dad moved to a care home due to dementia. H M shares, “For nearly three months, Home Instead Lancaster has been supporting my mum twice daily as she has not been coping on her own since my dad was moved to a home with dementia. What can I say? Their initial response to the request for assistance was immediate, effective, and efficient – hats off to the team.”

She continues to express her gratitude, praising the team’s patience and dedication in difficult circumstances: “Their care and patience have been outstanding, and I couldn’t ask for more. A huge thank you to the whole team; you truly are amazing.” H M’s story highlights how our support extends beyond the person living with dementia, helping spouses and families who also need care and understanding.
