Inspiring Future Care Professionals at Callywith Destinations Day

This week, we had the pleasure of meeting and talking with health and social care students at Callywith College’s Destinations Day. These bright and motivated 17- and 18-year-olds are already thinking ahead to their future careers, and we wanted to highlight the exciting and rewarding opportunities that a career in care can offer.

The Growing Need for Care in Cornwall

By 2036, over a third of people in Cornwall will be over 65, and the demand for home-based care and support is expected to rise significantly. For the care sector to meet this challenge, we need to adapt and evolve, ensuring that careers in care are not only fulfilling but also secure, well-paid, and well-supported. We compete to attract employees with other industries like hospitality, retail and the NHS. There will be more people to look after, and fewer people to provide the care. This is true across the UK and in most countries in the world as people liv longer and families have fewer children.

How Home Instead Mid Cornwall is Leading the Way

At Home Instead Mid Cornwall our mission is To Improve and Professionalise the Experience of Working in Care.

We have spent the last three years making positive changes to create a better working environment for our team, ensuring they feel valued and supported. These include:

Guaranteed contracts for job security
Paid travel and wait time between client visits
Improved working patterns for better work-life balance
Excellent training and development opportunities
Supportive supervision and management

The results have been transformational—our staff turnover has dropped dramatically, and we now have a more settled, experienced, and motivated team delivering outstanding dementia, companionship and personal care to our clients in their homes.

A Rewarding Career Awaits

It was fantastic to share our insights with the next generation of care professionals at Callywith College’s Destinations Day. We wanted to show these students that working in care isn’t just a job—it’s a fulfilling career with real opportunities for growth, development, and purpose.

As the demand for care continues to rise in Cornwall, it’s more important than ever to attract and retain compassionate, dedicated individuals who want to make a difference in people’s lives. By improving working conditions, offering better support, and raising awareness of the valuable and rewarding nature of care work, we hope to inspire more young people to consider this essential profession.

A Career Beyond Frontline Care

While frontline Care Professional and Care Management roles are at the heart of what we do, the care sector also offers career opportunities in areas like recruitment, HR, training, and marketing. As care organisations grow, these roles will become even more vital in supporting teams and ensuring the highest quality of care for clients.

A huge thank you to David Sellars and Callywith College for having us—we loved engaging with such enthusiastic students, and we’re excited to see where their journeys take them in the world of health and social care!
