Our team visited Home Instead South East Northumberland recently to experience the Dementia Bus tour!
A few members of the team here at Home Instead Newcastle visited our nearby office, Home Instead South East Northumberland, to experience the Dementia Bus Tour!
The Home Instead Dementia Bus is a virtual experience in collaboration with Training 2 Care, and tours the country allowing people to experience the life of a person with Dementia.
The virtual Dementia Tour offers a scientifically proven way to replicate dementia and is an invaluable learning experience for anyone who is supporting a person living with the condition.
Highly visual and aural, the experience (which takes place on a specially adapted bus) sees participants wearing goggles, headphones and spiky insoles. they are then asked to perform everyday tasks but with distorted vision, loud noises and sensory overload which replicate the sensory changes associated with dementia, causing difficulty and distress.
Our team experienced the training and said it provided a degree of clarity on some behaviours they have encountered, and also provided tips on caring for clients with Dementia. They would recommend the experience as interesting and insightful for anyone working in care or caring for older people.
‘The experience on the bus was something that will stay with me for a long tie and something that I wouldn’t want to experience in reality.’

Raising awareness about Dementia includes raising awareness about how a person with the condition is affected. It’s more than knowing about the condition, and includes a level of understanding of a person’s everyday life with Dementia.
Early diagnosis is paramount for helping a person live well with Dementia, and we are pledging to give out the Dementia Checklist this month. You can download the checklist here to use at home, and this can be used to instruct your doctor about further investigations that may be necessary.
