New Research Reveals Attitudes Towards Later Life

Our new Home Instead research has revealed that the stereotype of ‘old people’ is completely out of date. Many retirees now enjoy an active, healthy lifestyle and a lust of life most often associated with younger generations.

Here are the top facts that we uncovered.

Staying healthy & active

  • 89% of over-75s have an undiminished appetite for life agreeing on the need to stay active as you get older
  • 66% of all respondents endorse diet and exercise as a means to stay youthful
  • But there is also frustration with an average 58% agreeing that older people are not encouraged enough to play sport

Here at Home Instead Newcastle, we encourage our clients to maintain the active lifestyle they have always enjoyed and loved. One of our clients has enjoyed regular swimming sessions with their Care Professional, and stated how they would have lost themselves if they had to give up the hobby they have loved doing so much.

This is just one of the ways we go above and beyond for our clients, creating lasting relationships and doing meaningful activities. There is no place for fifteen minute visits with us.

What We Fear the Most as We Age

What we fear most as we age

  • People are more concerned about the prospect of ending up in a care home (44% ) than they would be about the death of a partner (36%)
  • 80% say that if they were to become ill then they would prefer to be treated at home – rising to 91% among the oldest age group
  • The specific conditions that people are afraid of are Alzheimer’s, other forms of dementia and cancer.

It is clear from this data that people want to age in their own homes and that independence is a priority for the majority of people. The most important take away is that home care delivers choice to our loved ones, they no longer have to go into a care home, and they can choose to be cared for in the place they love.
