A Season of Creativity and Joy
As the festive season approaches, North Devon transforms into a wonderland of twinkling lights, vibrant events, and cosy gatherings. For seniors and their families, this is a time to connect, celebrate, and create cherished memories. From local activities and markets to creative crafts that can be enjoyed at home, there’s no shortage of ways to make this Christmas special. Let’s explore how you can embrace the festive spirit in North Devon while ensuring a joyful and fulfilling season for everyone.
Nothing brings people together quite like decorating gingerbread. Whether you’re a seasoned baker or prefer pre-made kits, this activity is a delightful way to engage seniors in festive creativity.
These activities are a wonderful way to combine festive joy with meaningful engagement, creating lasting memories for everyone involved.
Head to Braunton’s Christmas Market or local shops in Barnstaple to pick up high-quality gingerbread kits. Pair the activity with festive music and a warm cup of hot chocolate for an afternoon filled with joy.
North Devon is known for its vibrant arts and crafts community, and the festive season is the perfect time to explore this creative hub. Seniors can participate in workshops or enjoy DIY crafts at home, creating unique decorations and gifts.
North Devon’s craft fairs are brimming with inspiration. Visit seasonal events offering handmade treasures such as wreaths, ornaments, and holiday cards. Many fairs also host workshops where participants can learn new skills.
If workshops aren’t an option, bring the creativity home:
North Devon’s Christmas markets are must-visit destinations during the holiday season. Braunton’s market, the largest in the region, features handcrafted gifts, local delicacies, and live entertainment. Seniors can enjoy a leisurely stroll through the stalls while soaking up the festive atmosphere.
Nothing says Christmas like a classic pantomime. The Queen’s Theatre in Barnstaple hosts an annual Christmas show that’s perfect for all ages. Expect music, humour, and plenty of audience participation.
Experience the magic of Christmas in Clovelly on Sunday, 8th December, from 4 pm to 10 pm, as the village transforms into a festive wonderland. Starting at 4 pm, a brass band leads a procession down to the harbour with carol singing along the way. Upon reaching the harbour, visitors can enjoy a hog roast, grog, and other refreshments at the Lifeboat Station. Father Christmas makes a surprise appearance before the lights are switched on at 5 pm, illuminating the entire village and harbour in spectacular fashion. The evening concludes with a breathtaking fireworks display over the harbour.
With plenty of opportunities to socialise and rest, this event is ideal for seniors, families, and Care Professionals to enjoy together. Entry costs £10 per car at the Visitor Centre after 3 pm, with all proceeds going to the RNLI.
