To help you make the most of your time in Sandbanks, we’ve put together some local tips and recommendations for family caregivers and older adults to enjoy summer, stay cool and some places to stop for refreshments too.
Sandbanks Beach
Sandbanks Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the UK, winning the blue flag award for more than 30 years, it’s known for its clean, golden sands and clear waters. There are some disabled parking spots, wheelchair accessible toilets, Mobi-Mat beach access matting and a beach accessible wheelchair in the summer months (wheelchair available on first come first served basis). Taking a parasol on a day with a calm sea breeze can make it an ideal place to beat the heat.
Poole Harbour
Take a leisurely walk around Poole Harbour, one of the largest natural harbours in the world. Enjoy the scenic views, watch the boats, and stop by one of the many cafés for an ice cream or cold drink. Seek out a bench to sit and rest while enjoying the harbour.
Brownsea Island
Take the ferry from Sandbanks
Brownsea Island offers a peaceful retreat with shaded woodland walks, red squirrel sightings, and beautiful views of the coastline. It’s a great place to explore and stay cool under the trees, with seating areas to rest and enjoy the scenery. Electric buggy tours are also available, as well as all terrain wheelchairs to hire, and a hop on hop off mini bus, check details at the National Trust website.

A favourite for many of our clients for a down to earth place to enjoy a bacon roll, a coffee, or a refreshing cold drink. There is the option to take away or take a seat inside or outdoors. Located near the Sandbanks Ferry, this café is close to both the beach and the harbour, making it a perfect stop during a seaside stroll.
Dehydration can be a concern for older adults, especially on hot days. When out and about, always carry a water bottle and sip regularly throughout the day. Consider adding a slice of lemon or cucumber for a refreshing twist. Our team also recommends having a jug of water or squash close by at home too.
Wear light, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Light-coloured clothing can help reflect the sun’s rays and keep you cooler. Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses for added protection.
Plan your outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are lower. This helps avoid the peak heat and makes for a more comfortable experience.
Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Reapply every two hours, or more often if sweating or swimming.
If you’re out and about, find shaded or air-conditioned spots to rest and cool down. Short, frequent breaks can help prevent overheating or getting tired.
Opt for light meals such as salads, fruits, and vegetables. These foods are nutritious and also water-rich to help keep you hydrated. We also like to add flavoured ice cubes to drinks, and to make home-made ice lollies in the freezer for a summer treat!
Summer is a great time to catch up with family, with an old friend or to make a new one. Plan social activities that all the family can enjoy, such as a picnic in the park, a beach day, or an ice cream outing. Our companionship service is a wonderful way to stay socially engaged and continue to visit the places you love with a friendly companion.
Whether you’re heading to the beach, taking a scenic walk, or relaxing in the garden or at a café, we wish you many delightful summer days in Sandbanks.
