Discover engaging activities in Portsmouth and Southsea for older adults. Stay active, connect with the community, and live well in the local area.
It’s inspiring to see the latest New Ageing Index report by Home Instead UK, which sheds light on how older adults across the UK feel about health, wellbeing, and social care as they age. One standout finding is that 89% of those aged 75 and over believe in staying active—something we see echoed every day by our clients here in Portsmouth and Southsea.
With this in mind, we’ve put together a friendly guide to some fantastic local activities that are perfect for older adults looking to stay active and connected in our community. Whether you’re interested in gentle exercise, creative workshops, or simply meeting new people, there’s something here for everyone.
1. Social clubs at Age UK Portsmouth

2. Portsmouth “Walking for Health”
Walking is one of the most accessible ways to stay active, and Portsmouth Walking for Health provides guided group walks that are at a steady pace. These free walks are designed to be accessible and also offer an excellent way to enjoy the local area, including along the seafront and nearby green spaces. The scheme is run jointly by Portsmouth City Council and the local Ramblers Association.
3. Fitness classes at The John Pounds Centre
The John Pounds Centre in Portsmouth offers activities including gentle exercise classes, chair-based fitness, and Mobility for 50+ designed specifically for older adults to stay active in a supportive environment.
4. Pompey in the Community
Pompey in the Community offers a range of programmes to boost health, wellbeing, and inclusivity across Portsmouth. One initiative close to our hearts is the Life ‘n’ Chimes Group, which provides support for people living with or at risk of developing dementia and those feeling socially isolated. The group meets every Wednesday morning at the Pompey in the Community office and also enjoys outings to local theatres, cinemas, bowling alleys, and the dockyard.
5. Spark Community Space

The centre offers a variety of activities, from crochet to volunteering, and a friendly space to enjoy a cuppa. Pop in for a chat every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 11 am to 2 pm, and discover a supportive community where everyone feels welcome.
6. Creative workshops at The Aspex
For those who enjoy the arts, The Aspex Gallery in Gunwharf Quays hosts creative workshops and also includes a session for those living with dementia. These sessions range from painting and drawing to ceramics and printmaking, providing a space to express creativity and connect with others. The gallery’s relaxed environment encourages participation, regardless of skill level, making it a place for all to enjoy.
7. Lifelong learning with U3A Portsmouth
