The New Ageing: Active living in Portsmouth and Southsea

Discover engaging activities in Portsmouth and Southsea for older adults. Stay active, connect with the community, and live well in the local area.

It’s inspiring to see the latest New Ageing Index report by Home Instead UK, which sheds light on how older adults across the UK feel about health, wellbeing, and social care as they age. One standout finding is that 89% of those aged 75 and over believe in staying active—something we see echoed every day by our clients here in Portsmouth and Southsea.

With this in mind, we’ve put together a friendly guide to some fantastic local activities that are perfect for older adults looking to stay active and connected in our community. Whether you’re interested in gentle exercise, creative workshops, or simply meeting new people, there’s something here for everyone.

The scheme is run jointly by Portsmouth City Council and the local Ramblers Association.

One initiative close to our hearts is the Life ‘n’ Chimes Group, which provides support for people living with or at risk of developing dementia and those feeling socially isolated. The group meets every Wednesday morning at the Pompey in the Community office and also enjoys outings to local theatres, cinemas, bowling alleys, and the dockyard.

The centre offers a variety of activities, from crochet to volunteering, and a friendly space to enjoy a cuppa. 6. Creative workshops at The Aspex
