Discover the passion of Helen, our owner, and how she leads Home Instead Portsmouth, nurturing strong community connections and providing exceptional care for older adults.
At Home Instead Portsmouth and Southsea, our dedication to exceptional home care is led by our owner Helen, whose personal experiences and professional background have shaped her journey to leading our team. Helen’s initial move into the care sector was inspired by her own family’s positive experience with home care, and today she brings experience and personal insight to Home Instead Portsmouth, ensuring that older adults in our community receive the highest standard of care.
“I’m incredibly proud of the work our team does,” she says. “Every day, I see the positive impact we have on the lives of our clients, and that’s what drives me to keep improving and expanding our home care services.”
Helen’s transition into the world of care began with a deeply personal experience, the loss of her mother. Reflecting on the exceptional care at home that her mother received, Helen felt inspired to ensure others in her community could have access to the same level of care and support.
“Losing my mum made me realise just how vital it is to provide quality care to those who may be facing similar challenges,” she shares. “I wanted to create a space where older adults and their families could find the companionship and support they deserve to live well at home.”
This experience led Helen to Home Instead, where she saw an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of older adults. As the proud mother of three sons, she has always valued the importance of care, compassion, and family connections. Her previous career as a primary school teacher helped shape her approach to care, ensuring a supportive environment for individuals and their families.
Before coming to Home Instead, Helen had spent 17 fulfilling years as a primary school teacher. Her teaching experience developed her skills of patience, understanding, and compassion, and supporting families – all of which are central to providing high-quality care.
Helen’s career in the care sector began with leadership roles at Home Instead Reigate and Tandridge, where she was Director and Registered Manager, and at Home Instead Havant, where she served as Consultant Manager. In both locations, Helen was directly involved in achieving outstanding ratings from the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Her experience in building high-performing teams, combined with her deep care for older adults, made her transition to owning and leading her own local office, a natural next step.
At Home Instead Portsmouth, Helen continues to focus on nurturing relationships between clients and Care Professionals and ensuring that each care plan is tailored to the needs of the individual.
Since leading Home Instead Portsmouth and Southsea, Helen has continued to prioritise excellence in care. Her leadership and dedication were recognised in 2024 when she was celebrated at the Inspirational Women of Portsmouth Awards, where she received recognition in the Emerging Business category. The annual awards celebrate individuals making a positive impact within their communities, and Helen’s inclusion is a reflection of her hard work and commitment to improving the lives of older adults in Portsmouth.
The team has also built a strong reputation, achieving a 9.8/10 review score (as of October 2024) on homecare.co.uk, which highlights the high standards of care and the trust families place in Home Instead Portsmouth. Helen’s ongoing commitment to building strong community partnerships, such as her involvement with dementia groups at Pompey in the Community and local organisations like Spark Community Space, has allowed the office to offer even more tailored support for clients, particularly those living with dementia.
At the heart of Helen’s approach to care is the belief that everyone deserves to live well and independently at home. She focuses on providing care that empowers independence while building strong, trusting relationships between clients and their Care Professionals. Care isn’t just about tasks, it’s about promoting well-being and enhancing quality of life.
Helen’s leadership continues to guide Home Instead Portsmouth toward excellence, ensuring that the older adults we support receive the compassionate, personalised care they deserve.
