We were made aware of Home Instead in November 2019 as a way to give Mum and I some help with looking after Dad at home who was diagnosed with Vascular dementia and it was important for him to get to know his carers before his memory prevented this. Right from the beginning, this company took time and effort to put a small team of caregivers together to assist in his care. My dad had four wonderful caregivers who each brought something different to his quality of life and he really benefited from getting to know each one individually. He referred to them as his “friends” and looked forward to their visits. Our use of the service was perhaps not typical; to start with my husband was extremely unwell, then he was absent from home on four weeks respite care, then when he returned he was very much better and needed less care. The caregivers were excellent in all they did, whether personal care or housework or companionship; they were really caring and interested in us. The contact with the management was impressive. The staff there were sympathetic and understanding of our situation, able and willing to adjust our contract to fit our changing needs, and so pleasant, helpful, efficient and interested. All involved at the agency, whether managers or caregivers felt like friends. It was so good to find this level of service as previously we had to endure local authority contracted care agencies. I wish we’d called on them ages ago! Home Instead has made such a difference to my mother’s quality of life. Mum’s main carer is fabulous and mum considers her a friend. She really goes out of her way to find things that will be of interest to mum and she cheers mum up no end. The management are also fab. In the early stages, I had to reschedule meetings with Home Instead staff at very short notice due to issues with mum and they were completely understanding and full of advice. We have used Home Instead for 5 years and their continued support and care for Mum is outstanding. The same carer is provided every time and as Mum’s needs have increased, help has been provided. As my brother and I live some distance, we know we can rely on Mum’s carer to accompany her to hospital appointments as well as providing thoughtful care at home. She visits twice a week and does housework, washing and any other odd jobs that need doing i.e. sewing buttons on. When is palliative care needed?
Palliative care is an option that your clinical team may suggest if you or a loved one have received a diagnosis of a serious or terminal illness, such as cancer, lung disease or Alzheimer’s. Our Care Professionals can provide support that will alleviate discomfort and stress and allow a better quality of life.
How soon should palliative care begin?
Palliative care can be started at any stage of a serious illness, though it can be recommended to start as early as possible depending on the diagnosis and the treatment required. After finding out what treatments are required you can be easily make an informed decision on when palliative care is needed.
Is palliative care the same as end of life care?
Not necessarily. While palliative care can include end of life care, it is certainly not always the case and can last for a longer period of time. Some people are able to live comfortably for many years while receiving palliative care. The focus is always providing support as you need it to allow you to carry on with your daily life within the limits of your condition.
Will palliative care cause me to lose independence?
Our Care Professionals understand that maintaining your control over your daily life is important. Depending on what care you need for your condition you may need help with a few things or more help with a lot of your usual tasks. The level of help required is likely to change over time, but Home Instead will be there to ensure you keep as your independence for as long as possible.
Should I continue palliative care after successful treatment?
During your illness you may receive successful treatment from your clinical team. Depending on the outcome of this treatment you may no longer require palliative care, however it may be beneficial to continue for a short while. During the recovery process it can be beneficial to you and your loved ones to have some relief from the physical and emotional stress a serious illness can cause.
