For many families, live-in care offers an ideal balance of support, independence, and comfort. But what exactly is live-in care, and how does it work?
When it comes to supporting loved ones who need additional care, finding the right solution can feel overwhelming. For many families, live-in care offers an ideal balance of support, independence, and comfort. But what exactly is live-in care, and how does it work?
Live-in care is a tailored service where a dedicated Care Professional resides in the home of the person needing care. This arrangement provides round-the-clock support, ensuring that your loved one’s physical, emotional, and social needs are met in the comfort and familiarity of their own home.
Unlike care homes, where individuals must adapt to a new environment and schedule, live-in care prioritises the person’s existing lifestyle and routines. Whether assistance is needed with daily activities, companionship, or more specialised medical care, live-in care adapts to individual needs.
1. Personalised Support
Live-in care ensures that care is tailored to the individual’s unique requirements, and we achieve this through compiling a detailed care plan. Whether it’s helping with morning routines, preparing favourite meals, or assisting with mobility, the carefully matched Care Professional provides one-on-one attention.
Unlike care homes, where staff ratios may vary, live-in care guarantees focused, personalised support from a dedicated Care Professional. While the CQC does not specify a precise ratio of staff to care home residents, live-in care provides peace of mind by ensuring your loved one receives consistent, individual care without the limitations of shared resources.
2. Independence and Comfort
Remaining in their own home allows individuals to maintain their independence and enjoy the familiarity of their surroundings, which is especially beneficial for those living with dementia or other conditions affecting memory.
3. Continuity of Care
Having a dedicated care professional means that your loved one benefits from consistent support. This continuity helps build a strong, trusting relationship between the Care Professional and their client.
4. Relationship-led Care
Loneliness can have a significant impact on well-being, particularly for older adults. Live-in care offers not just practical help but also companionship, enhancing mental and emotional health.
5. Family Peace of Mind
Knowing that a qualified Care Professional is on hand provides families with reassurance that their loved one is safe and well cared for, even if they can’t be present themselves.
Live-in care is suitable for a wide range of individuals, including:
The process begins with an in-depth consultation to assess the client’s needs, preferences, and lifestyle. A Care Professional is then carefully matched to provide the right balance of skills and personality.
They live in the home, typically working on a rotational basis with one other Care Professional to ensure continuous support.
Live-in care arrangements can vary based on the individual’s needs. Some Care Professionals focus on companionship and household tasks, while others have advanced training for medical or specialised care.
During a 24-hour period, the Care Professional is required to take a two-hour break during the day and 11 hours are allocated for rest in the evening / overnight. However, they can be on hand if the client requires occasional reassurance or help during the night. On average, there are 10 hours of active contact time within each 24-hour period.
For clients who have specific needs such as dementia and cannot be left alone, arrangements can be made for family members or another care professional to provide support during the required breaks and rest periods, ensuring safety and continuity of care.
Importantly, having a live-in Care Professional doesn’t mean sacrificing privacy. If, for example, they prefer to enjoy a quiet moment with a cup of tea whilst reading the paper, the Care Professional can get them settled and spend time elsewhere in the home.
Typically, live-in Care Professionals work on a two-week rotational basis, with two professionals forming a team. This system not only fosters familiarity and consistency but also provides seamless cover for time off or unforeseen absences.
