Staying active and fit is just as important when you are older, we find some clubs and activites to help you stay fit and active.
Whether it’s the Euros or Wimbledon or the Olympics, sport is on people’s minds even more than usual this summer. We’ve been cheering on our favourite teams and sportspeople through the highs and lows of their competitions and have perhaps been inspired to try something new ourselves.
Although many of us are keen participators in sports of one kind or another, the perception can often be that we have to give up the activities we love as we get older. However, there are lots of options available for keeping fit as we age and in fact many of today’s older adults are keen to take those opportunities. Home Instead’s recent survey, The New Ageing Index, found that 89% of those aged 75 and above want to stay physically active as they get older.
This is a hugely encouraging statistic given the many benefits of keeping fit. From reducing the risk factors of various diseases to improving our mental health and giving us opportunities to socialise with others who enjoy the same pursuits, staying active is undeniably good for us. If you or someone you love are looking for ways to stay active in older life, the good news is that there are lots of options available. We’ve highlighted some options below to give you a taste for what’s on offer in our area.
There are gentler versions of popular sports available, such as walking tennis, which you can play in both Salisbury and Romsey. There are also walking versions of rugby in bothlocations. If football is more your thing, there are options for thattoo.
If you’re not keen on team sports, you may like to look at Get Wiltshire Walking or perhaps even a dance class. Alternatively, Bodywise Pilates in Salisbury offer classes for over 60s as well as chair classes for those with restricted mobility.
However you choose to do it, we hope that throughout the summer and beyond, you stay fit and active and have fun!
