Community Dementia Awareness Sessions: Why Education and Support Matter For Families and Communities

As the population ages, understanding the challenges older adults face becomes increasingly important. Recently Home Instead conducted the New Ageing Index Survey, to gain deeper insights into the needs of older adults, particularly in relation to Dementia. The survey, which gathered responses from 1,000 people across various age groups and demographics, explored a wide range of topics – from health and well-being to technology and social inclusion. However, an issue that stood out was Dementia.

The findings of the survey were quite striking:

84% of people believe more should to done to educate families about living with Dementia. Many respondents shared that they felt ill-equipped to support loved ones who are diagnosed, highlighting a gap in public understanding.

82% of respondents expressed that having better Dementia treatment options at home would dramatically improve lives. This shows that there is a strong preference for home-based care, which offers a more personalised and comfortable environment for those living with Dementia, allowing them to stay in their own familiar surroundings while receiving the support they need.

With nearly a million people living with Dementia in the UK today, this issue impacts not just those directly affected, but families, friends and communities as well. At Home Instead South Cheshire, we recognise the effects Dementia can have on individuals and their loved ones. Which is why we are committed to increasing awareness and understanding.

Dementia can be an overwhelming condition to navigate, especially when knowing how to support someone living with the condition. Many people are unaware of the signs and symptoms, or how best to assist someone who may be showing early indicators. This lack of knowledge can lead to feelings of isolation and frustration for both the person living with Dementia and their carers.

Education is the key to changing this. By increasing awareness of Dementia and providing practical advice, we can help communities to better understand how to support those living with the condition. This, in turn, creates a more compassionate and informed environment for those with Dementia.

To help address the growing need, we offer community Dementia Awareness Sessions tailored to families, community groups, businesses and schools. These sessions are designed to:

  • Educate participants about the signs and symptoms of Dementia
  • Provide tips and strategies for supporting individuals with Dementia
  • Offer practical advice for families and caregivers on how to manage daily challenges
  • Raise awareness about the importance of early diagnosis and intervention
