Supporting Social Care – A Visit from Jeff Smith MP

At Home Instead, we are passionate about providing high-quality care and advocating for the needs of those who rely on social care services.

We were pleased to welcome Jeff Smith MP, who visited us to discuss the upcoming National Insurance increases and the significant impact they will have on social care providers.

The Challenges Facing Social Care

Social care is a vital sector that plays a crucial role in supporting individuals and families across the UK. However, despite its importance, the sector is facing chronic underfunding, and the planned increases in National Insurance contributions will place an even greater strain on providers.

Key facts about social care in the UK:
Social care contributes £68.1 billion to the UK economy.
It employs 1.59 million people and supports thousands of volunteers.
For every £100 spent, social care saves the NHS £35.

Yet, care providers are struggling to keep up with demand due to financial pressures, staffing shortages, and growing inequalities in the system – particularly for older adults and those living with dementia.

Key Discussions with Jeff Smith MP

During the visit, we shared our concerns about the impact of National Insurance increases and the wider challenges affecting the sector. Jeff listened with genuine interest and empathy, asking what the government could do to provide better support.

We highlighted the urgent need for:
Increased support for recruitment and training in social care.
A fair funding model to ensure care providers can continue delivering essential services.
Exempting social care from National Insurance increases—just as the NHS is exempt.

Taking Action

We are grateful that Jeff took the time to meet with us and discuss these pressing issues. However, the fight for fairer funding and better support for social care continues. We encourage everyone to join the movement and make their voices heard.
