Dementia Care in Sutton Coldfield and the Surrounds

Person-centred care involves tailoring a person's care to their interests, background and personality; this is of greater importance to people living with dementia.

Care Professional Case Study:

Coming into care for the first time was very daunting for me, particularly due to my lack of experience. However, Home Instead Sutton Coldfield made me feel at ease from the outset largely owing to their incredible office team and training methods.

As well as undertaking rigorous training in Medication and Manual Handling, we also had the opportunity to strengthen our understanding of dementia, a progressive condition that causes a decline in cognitive abilities, such as thinking and remembering, and one that is very much prevalent across our industry. Home Instead delivered specific dementia training which enabled me to:

  • Obtain a deeper knowledge of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia
  • Understand how to manage changes in communication and behaviour
  • Become better at personal care and monitoring hygiene
  • Keep the home environment safe, particularly for falls prevention
  • Better understand medication management
  • Manage financial and legal issues

It became apparent that Home Instead were the experts in dementia care in the local community and invest heavily in their staff to deliver quality person-centred care, setting them apart from their competitors. The learnings I received from the training were incredible, notably understanding some golden rules on how to support someone living with dementia more effectively, like:

1) Don’t ask direct questions

2) Listen to the expert – the person with dementia – and learn from them

3) Don’t contradict

Dementia can be a challenging condition to get to grips with, which is why it’s vitally important for carers to obtain the necessary training so we can safely and effectively care for our clients living with dementia. Partnering with a quality home care provider, like Home Instead Sutton Coldfield, is also a key consideration when deciding how dementia care is managed not least because I’ve seen numerous benefits of staying at home when one has dementia, maintaining independence and feeling secure and safe being two big ones.
