Building on last year's successful dog café event, we are excited to announce the return of 'Furry Friends Café,' now on a grander scale and in partnership with Llys Nini.
Last year, during Dementia Action Week, we launched our very first ‘Furry Friends Café.’ The event, hosted by the charming ‘Dewkes‘ pet shop and café in Sketty, was a sell-out success. We welcomed seniors living with dementia and their caregivers for a delightful afternoon filled with good coffee and gorgeous dogs.
People travelled from far and wide—including care homes, assisted living complexes, and private residences—to participate in the unique ‘Furry Friends Café.’ The event featured an array of friendly dogs, from Cavachons and King Charles Cavaliers to a Serbian Rescue, all enjoying plenty of treats and cuddles. Truly, there was something for everyone to enjoy!
The positive impact that animals, particularly dogs, can have on individuals living with dementia is well-documented, and the effects were clearly visible during the event. Dogs naturally calm people, helping to reduce anxiety, boost confidence, and break down social barriers, fostering new friendships over a shared love of animals. It’s for all these reasons that we deemed a dog-themed event perfect for raising awareness during Dementia Action Week.
To ensure that no one misses out this year, we aimed to scale up the event, accommodating more guests and more dogs. We were thrilled to learn that Llys Nini was eager to partner with us for this expanded event, allowing us to bring even more joy to participants during Dementia Action Week, while also raising essential funds to help the amazing effort of the dog charity.
This year’s event will take place at Llys Nini‘s beautiful on-site café in Penllergaer, where we can accommodate up to 30 guests. More guests mean more dogs, so we’ve curated a stunning line-up including Jack Russell’s, Bichons, Cocker Spaniels, and some beautiful RSPCA rescues for you to meet! Included in the £5 ticket price, you’ll receive entry to the event, a lovely hot drink, a cake, and the opportunity to enjoy time with all the dogs you could wish for. All proceeds from ticket sales and money raised on the day will go directly to support the Llys Nini rescue centre.
At the event, we will be welcoming dementia specialists from the Dementia Hwb and Alzheimer’s Society. These knowledgeable professionals will be available to offer advice and guidance on dementia, providing support for those in need.
