Staying Connected: The Transformative Benefits of Companionship Calls for Care Home Residents

At Home Instead Swansea, we believe that everyone deserves to feel valued and connected, no matter where they call home.

Even when living with a house-full of people, it’s been reported that 68% of nursing home residents experience loneliness (Journal of Ageing and Health, 2020). Reasons for this include reduced mobility and health issues, lack of meaningful activities, loss of loved ones, and of course the lasting effects of the COVID pandemic. With care home staff stretched, and families struggling to juggle family-life and regular visits to their elderly parents, 56% of people in care homes only have visitors less than once a month, if it all (Alzheimer’s Society, 2021).
Loneliness in seniors is often reported to have significant and upsetting impact on their physical well-being, and is linked to a 29% increase in heart disease (Heart Foundation, 2016), an increase of 64% in developing clinical dementia (American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, 2020) and ultimately an average increase risk of early death of 29% (Perspectives on Psychological Science, 2015)
All things considered, the categorical need for meaningful interactions and social engagement for those living in residential care homes is evident, and it’s for that reason that we have extended our proven ‘Companionship’ service to those residing in care home.
In this blog, we explore how these simple yet profound calls can brighten days, ease feelings of loneliness, and enrich the lives of those living in care homes.

So, what is Companionship Care?

Companionship is a unique approach to care that focuses primarily on a person’s emotional well-being rather than their practical needs. It involves providing an individual with their own carefully matched companion, with whom they can enjoy spending quality time with and enjoy activities they love. This may be going out shopping, attending a Swans match day, going out for coffee, or a walk in a local park. The world’s your oyster with your own personal Home Instead Chauffer!

If an individual doesn’t want to, or can’t get out, we support with companionship inside as well. This may include organising a crafting session, doing a jigsaw, cooking together, or simply just having a good natter. No matter what it is, our Care Professionals provide tailored, meaningful and memorable visits to look forward to!

How does Companionship Care work in Care Homes?

Whether someone lives in a care home or their own home, the way that we deliver Companionship Care is very similar. On the days and times of your choice, your carefully matched Care Professional will arrive at your home, briefed and ready to support you with all of the activities and trips detailed in the care plan that you helped create. All of our Care Professionals have their own fully-insured cars, so they will be able to drive you all over Swansea, ensuring that every call can be a different experience! Once you’ve polished off your ice cream in Mumbles, you’re all shopped-out in town, or the final whistle has blown at the match, your Care Professional will return you to your home after a fun-filled day out.

Alternatively, if companionship is required indoors, we can match you with someone who shares the same interests and hobbies that you can enjoy in the comfort of your home. They can even go out and grab supplies from the shop during your call if that’s something you wanted.
