Home Instead’s latest research, The New Ageing Index, busts some myths and unveils people’s real attitudes towards retirement and later life.
It has revealed that the stereotype is wrong when it comes to getting older.
The New Ageing Index is a detailed look at what people think when they reflect on the prospect of their later years. The results show an undipping appetite for life.
Many retirees now enjoy an active, healthy lifestyle and a lust for life, proving that age is really just a number!
Staying healthy & active
89% of over-75’s have an undiminished appetite for life agreeing on the need to stay active as you get older.
66% of all respondents endorse diet and exercise as a means to stay youthful.
One of our clients is a true reflection of the research carried out. Albert is 90 years young and lives with his wife, who is also a client of ours.
Albert was an incredibly successful CEO businessman who is living with dementia. They have children in Australia and the closest live over 70 miles away.
Albert has early dementia and will discuss this quite openly. His daughters are great advocates for him but for the main part Albert likes to speak for himself and express his wishes. They are both keen gardeners and Albert enjoys a spot of golf. They reached out to Home Instead Taunton and West Somerset looking for some care to enable them to access the community easier.
Albert’s Care Professional, Rachel, recently took Albert to ‘Together in Sport’. A weekly event created by Reminiscence Learning in partnership with Somerset Cricket Foundation.
The sports reminiscing project will take place at the iconic Cooper Associates County Ground every Monday from 10AM – 12:30PM. We reminisce, along with a variety of gentle physical activities including boccia, new age curling, swing ball and table cricket to get people active
‘This week we played cricket in the nets and R hit the balls so hard I had to run! We completed a questionnaire about Mondays – R said he enjoyed everything and liked talking to the others and everyone joining in. He likes that people are doing things and not just talking about old memories. He said enjoying things made him feel better afterwards.’- Rachel
The results have been incredible. Albert continues to remain active with our support and is surrounded by people going through the same situation as him, promoting physical and mental wellbeing.
The research suggests that maintaining independence, remaining healthy and staying active are key priorities for most individuals and it’s clear to see that our services can positively contribute to all those areas. Whether it’s a visit to Reminiscence Learning or visiting the highly popular Love to Move session or simply being taken care of in your own home by our wonderful Care Professionals, we are here to help you age well with the utmost dignity, respect and independence.

Our Live-In care services also allow people to remain at home even when their health deteriorates rather than moving into a care home, which we know most are concerned about.
